Reports are that Microsoft will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets beginning with an open house on October 11th. Worldwide events will follow starting October 21st. Further reports said that Windows Phone 7 handsets would be on shelves in the UK and Europe by October 21, but no one knew of the planned U.S. release date.
There is a lot of enthusiasm for Windows Phone 7 from those who have tried it and potential customers are excited about its integration with the Xbox Live platform. The Windows Phone 7 will also have the capability to download films and music from Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace.
Experts say that if Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is to successfully compete with apple’s iOS and Google’s Android Operating System, being just as good won’t be good enough. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 will have to be something better.
Being something better is where the integration with Xbox Live comes into play. Online gaming is a large void in the portable device market. No one else seems geared or equipped to fill this void at the current time and this gives Microsoft a giant opportunity. Whether Microsoft can take advantage of this void or not will, more than likely decide its fate in the smartphone business.
Perhaps that is why the company seems so quiet about its smartphone with the game integration. Microsoft would only confirm that they are holding an event on October 11th and had no comment on the Windows Phone 7 or its release date.
