The multiplayer option in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas received rave reviews when it was released back in 2006. The feature was specially noted because the multiplayer feature is often treated as an afterthought in many shooters. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was closely guarded until recently and now it’s confirmed that the game will hit the stores on March 14 in Europe. Ubisoft has tweaked up the cooperative campaign mode and thrown in multiplayer modes. The final version will support up to 16 players, both online and offline, on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Though downloadable content was heavily hinted at, there is no official word as of that as of yet. Vegas 2 is powered by the same Unreal Engine that was used in the first game. This allowed Ubisoft to concentrate more on the multiplayer gameplay, AI and graphics.
One vital aspect that the developers wanted was to make sure that the game didn’t disappoint on graphics in the multiplayer section. Vegas 2 features 11 new weapons and some of the existing weapons have been tweaked for instance the shotgun reload speed has been improved from somewhat sluggish to a swifter half second between shots. The bullet penetration changes have made the weapon selection more vital. The physics concerning your chosen cover will determine how much damage you sustain when hiding behind it, concrete walls and metal will provide more protection while taking cover behind plywood is asking for trouble. The developers have added a sprint feature which can be activated by a quick button press. However it can be used only in short bursts, and you won’t be able to shoot when sprinting. It is basically a neat way of getting from one cover to the next or when traversing small open areas.
Ubisoft has revamped the cooperative play in Vegas; as a result the whole story can be played from start to finish with flawless toggling between one and two players. If you are playing a campaign your friend can join in as a teammate, if your friend quits, the system will take control of the character. The game also features a new multiplayer mode that is guaranteed to provide some fresh experience even for seasoned Rainbow Six fans. The new team leader mode tasks you with getting your leader to an extraction point or exterminates the oppositions. However, the twist is that both the leaders are able to see the position of the opposition leader as a star on the heads up display. As long as the team leader is alive, the team members are able to respawn into the game even if killed. However, the opponents killed by a team leader cannot spawn back into the game. In case both the team leaders get eliminated, the game becomes a survival mode with no more respawning. Players who are familiar with the Counter Strike VIP mode will hardly find anything fresh here except for maybe the Rainbow Six flavor. The multiplayer campaign looks promising and while not extremely creative or engaging is nonetheless fun to play.
