Broadband comparison website www.broadband-expert.co.uk has reported that pay as you go mobile broadband is now more popular with students than fixed broadband deals. Students are taking advantage of the lack of contract with pay as you go mobile broadband deals and the flexibility it offers them.

Mobile broadband is particularly popular with students as it can be used at home, in lecture halls, or even in a bar. Broadband Expert say that there are a number of advantages for students in choosing between pay as you go mobile broadband and a fixed broadband service. Firstly the lack of contract and credit check is very appealing to those on a tight budget. Secondly, unlike fixed broadband, mobile broadband can be brought home with students at the end of the term.

However there currently a number of limitations for mobile broadband, it is typically much slower than fixed broadband services making it less suitable for activities such as online gaming and streaming video. Usage can be expensive too if you download large amounts of data in which case you would we well advised to chose from one of the wide range of home broadband deals and offers currently available. Broadband Expert believe that as the technology behind mobile broadband improves it could be a real alternative to fixed broadband deals for millions of people over the next 5 years.

Pay as you go broadband (or PAYG) has been under-going massive growth across the UK in recent months – Tesco reported in August 2009 that it has seen a 70% growth in the number of pay as you go mobile broadband sales. Tesco has seen increased sales all across its stock of mobile broadband dongles from the major UK mobile providers; this includes Orange, o2, Vodafone, T-mobile and Three.

All the mobile operators have seen increases in broadband sales and have reacted quickly to the public’s desire to switch from broadband contracts to pay as you go broadband options. If you view the chart (see below) of broadband trends (provided by Google) you can clearly see that where the search for home broadband has remained relatively flat through time, the number of searches for pay as you go broadband has been growing in popularity since 2006 whereas pay as you go mobile broadband has increased massively since the beginning of 2008.

If you are interested in finding out more about pay as you go broadband then visit the PAYG broadband website. It is focused on PAYG broadband advice, news and products.

But why has there been such a surge in PAYG broadband? It is difficult to tell exactly but there could be a number of contributing factors. Here is a few possible ones:

The credit crunch – people are reviewing their fixed out-goings and looking for ways to minimise all but essential repeated, monthly costs.

Increase in mobile phones – having a land-line phone connection is no longer seen as a necessity, more an expensive hindrance that home broadband user require.

Flexibility of workplace – where you are in business, a student or just looking to get away from the office, mobile broadband offers you the freedom to work from anywhere. And a pay as you go deal offers you the freedom from an expensive mobile contract.

It looks like PAYG is not only growing quickly but likely to be popular for some time yet.
