If you are a keen gamer and you want your computing to remain mobile you may be considering buying a gaming laptop instead of a desktop. Laptops have come a long way since the early days of mobile chips being underpowered to conserver power to avoid draining the battery quickly and now sport processors that are often comparable to powerful desktops. This piece will look at two of the latest gaming laptops available.

Alienware`s M11x is available for £599, it`s a small screen laptop at a mere 11.6 inches aimed at combined huge power with mobility. Inside you will find an Nvidia Geforce GT 335M dedicated graphics card instead of the integrated graphics you would find in many non-gaming oriented laptops. The card has an impressive gigabyte of video memory and as a result gives great results in graphical benchmarks. The heart of the machine is its ultra low voltage dual core processor, an Intel Pentium running at 1.3 GHz and if this is not powerful enough there is an option to upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Duo for a further £55. This is matched with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, with options of 4 and 8 GB also available along with the choice of 320 GB and 500 GB harddrives or alternatively a 256 GB solid state disk. The 11.6 inch display offers a reasonable 1,366 by 768 pixel resolution and is powered by both the powerful Geforce card and, if the user wishes, they can switch to the lower power onboard integrated graphics. Physically it is a netbook with the power of a desktop making it an impressive design. The M11x will cost you £1,184 including VAT, making it one of the less expensive gaming laptops.

At the other end of the spectrum is another laptop from Alienware, this time the M17x, a truly monstrous machine. The red lights and red backlit keyboard immediately conveys this machine`s gaming credentials and this is further backed up by what`s under the bonnet. The machine is powered by the top processor available, Intel`s new Sandy Bridge, the quad core i7, giving the M17x processing power to compete with any desktop. While the laptop is very heavy at four and a half kilos it is mainly aimed at desktop use, as a mobile laptop it offers almost three hours of battery life. Its display is a vibrant looking 17.3 inch panel capable of displaying full 1080p video at 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution. Driving this display are is not one but two graphics cards as the machine has a pair of Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M 1 GB cards arranged in an SLI configuration. These give it enormous power for gaming and other graphically intensive tasks such as photoshop, movie editing and computer aided design. This is supported by 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500 GB hard disk. It also has a DVD read/write drive and very good connectivity via a full array of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, VGA and HDMI out allowing the laptop to drive all modern displays and play high definition content on other devices.

Gaming laptops now compare very competitively with desktop computers carrying the same kinds of processors and potentially offering the same level of graphics and performance.
