A new, tougher glass was showcased Thursday by a Japanese manufacturer of glass. It is specifically manufactured for PC tablets and iPhones.
The company, Asahi Glass, announced that Dragontrail Glass is a better candidate for the lifestyle these portable gadgets live, since it is measured at six times the strength of normal soda lime glass.
In Tokyo, at a press conference, journalists were encouraged to try breaking the glass or even scratching it. Using a key, it couldn’t be done. Dropping the glass wouldn’t break it either.
Videos were viewed where 60Kgs were placed on the glass and it bent, but refused to break. Even the blow of a hammer was repelled.
The goal is not only stronger screens, but actually thinner ones. This will give rise to much lighter gadgets.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is a direct competitor of the Dragontrail Glass. The Corning product is already popular with manufacturers of the gadgets and is currently included in over 200 mobile devices. This is the glass on the front of Sony’s flat-panel LCD TV’s and is part of cell phones, tablet PC’s, and laptops.
Dragontrail Glass has been under development for the past couple of years and it is already being shipped to electronic manufacturers. They have yet to reveal who their customers are.
