Verizon looks to have finally landed Apple’s iPhone. The news comes to further feed speculations that surround the situation.
If true, the deal between Verizon and Apple would put a line under AT&T Inc., Verizon’s fierce rival, exclusivity right on the Smartphone. It will also mean that smaller competitors such as T-Mobile, Nextel Corp., and Sprint will have to face up to completion not only from one but two giants who own rights to one of the highest demanded handset in the USA: Apple’s iPhone.
According to the reports, Verizon are set to announce the deal in a press conference on Tuesday. Verizon are expected to announce the date in which the handset will be available in its stores.
The phone is going to run on Verizon’s CDMA technology. And although the hype surrounding Verizon’s 4G LTE implementation plans, the technology is not likely to be ready for voice calls on the new network before 2012.
Much of AT&Ts growth in the past few years is down to the provider exclusive deal with apple on the iPhone. It is said that it attracted millions of new subscribers who only flocked to AT&T for the sake of owning iPhone.
The report said, that the deal was motivated by Apple’s wish for faster growth of the iPhone sales in the US. Apple realises that the exclusive deal with AT&T had been a key to iPhone’s success.
The deal could see a shift of Verizon’s focus from Android to the iPhone. Over the course of 2010, Verizon had managed to strike deal with major Android players, such as HTC and Motorola.
The report stressed on Verizon keenness to bring iPhone to its stores, despite the significant success of the Android phone over the course of last year.
