Although Google may have had a slow response with its Google Android operating system for mobile phones, the Motorola Droid is starting to take off which shows, given it has been named the Time best gadget of 2009.
The device, also commonly referred to as the Motorola Milestone, is starting to make waves in Britain after gaining massive market approval in the US due to its ability to run Android, it’s full QWERTY keyboard, and of course its stunning touch screen.
According to Time magazine, the Droid is the first real challenge that Apple’s iPhone has faced in the smartphone market. Time stated that the Droid does not have the glossy finish that marks the iPhone, but it is hard to miss given that it is a solid piece of metal with a sizable keyboard and of course access to the 3G network.
Android has seen its popularity and critical acceptance make giant strides this year as another Android enabled mobile phone, the HTC hero, was awarded the title of gadget of the year by popular techno blog Pocket Lint, T3, and Stuff.
What makes the Droid stand out however from previous models, is that it has the new Android 2.0 software upgrade that allows for many new features such as turn-by-turn GPS navigation.
Although the iPhone took the Time award last year, this year its upgrade the 3GS failed to make the top three landing in fourth place in the annual feature.
