Monday saw an announcement from Lenovo that they have a touchscreen ultrabook that by simply flipping the display can be turned into a tablet. The IdeaPad Yoga has a 13.3in screen and the ultrabook was demonstrated during a Lenovo press conference at the CES in Las Vegas running on the upcoming Windows 8 OS from Microsoft.
Yang Yuanqing, the CEO and chairman of Lenovo, said during the press conference that you can simply fold it from a PC into a tablet, or from a tablet into a PC. The ultrabook is very slim, making it easy and comfortable to hold when in tablet mode. The unit is 1.6cm thick and weighs 1.4kg, and, according to Lenovo, provides 8 hours of battery life from a single charge.
Yuanqing also said t hat the IdeaPad Yoga will be on general sale once Windows 8 has been released, and whilst the date has been pencilled in for later in 2012, no official release date as been announced as yet.
Ultrabooks are the latest category of slim, lightweight laptops and are backed heavily by Intel, who are trying to revive the flagging PC market by injecting it with new designs in laptops. Earlier on Monday, Intel had said that any future ultrabooks would implement the features you see on tablets, and have longer battery life, voice recognition and touch screens.
Lenovo didn’t share any more details about the IdeaPad Yoga, but Yuanqing warned that the PC market wasn’t going anywhere soon, and that innovation would continue in PC just as it was doing in tablets and smartphones. He said that many people believed that the traditional PC was coming to the end of its life, but his company believed the opposite.
It is expected that the IdeaPad Yoga will come with the new and upcoming Intel Core processors, code namedIvyBridge, and will provide both a faster application and better graphics performance. The ultrabook was only one of the many devices which :Lenovo intends to introduce at CES, these include voice controlled 3D smart televisions complete with Android 4.0, smartphones and tablets, one of which has a quad core processor.
