There has been a lot of talk lately about LCD televisions that have LED backlighting and whether the devices will be worth picking up if your home LCD television is still working just fine. The question is valid enough given that most people do not have a lot of spare change in their pocket, however, before making a decision it is helpful to know just exactly what you are getting if you purchase a LCD television (such as a Sony LCD TV Bravia) that comes equipped with LED backlighting. While the phrase may sound cool, the actual technology behind it is even cooler.
First of all, it is important to understand that LCD televisions have a transmissive display which means that they are not able to create their own light which is why they come with a backlight. Before LED backlighting it was standard for a LCD television to make use of CCFLs, of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps for their backlight. Now that LEDs are finally becoming cheaper to manufacture though they are taking a step up towards the most desirable backlight which should be easy enough for anyone who has replaced florescent lighting due to its harsh presence in their home before.
One of the first advantages of using a LED television is the fact that it is thinner which makes the lfat screen LCD television even more of a flat screen that is streamlined to fit virtually anywhere in your home. Another perk is that LED backlighting does not require as much energy to run as CCFLs which make them not only cheaper to use, but better on the whole for the environment which is another major factor that is on many people’s minds outside of money. In fact, most of the new LCD televisions with LED backlighting even carry the Energy Star logo on them.
However, the most important question is one that is up in the air, how much of an improvement is the visual quality of LED backlighting versus it predecessor? While the television may be thinner in form, the LED backlighting does not change the ration of contrast much even thought the technology is much sleeker in names. Thus, you can make the purchase if you want to reduce your energy consumption or have the newest toy on the block, but if you want a better picture you really will not get one simply by switching to a LCD television with LED backlighting.
