Steve Jobs and Apple should be looking over their shoulders, for a new rival to the iPad is due to arrive. Powered by Google’s latest operating system, Motorola Xoom has been unveiled in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics show (CES).
The operating system, known as Honeycomb, is especially designed for touch-screen tablets. Honeycomb will come shipped with a new 3D mapping software and a new email systems that is designed to make the most of the tablet environment. Not much more is known about Honeycomb, as Google are holding their cards close to their chest when it comes to their latest OS.
Like iPad, Motorola Xoom will command a 10’’ fully touch-sensitive screen. It is set to hit the American markets before June. It will arrive in the UK shortly after. Motorola Xoom is not the first gadget to be powered by a Google OS; Samsung 7’’ tablet have beaten it to that honour. However, Samsung used a version of the OS that is used in Google phones. Xoom will boast being the first to host Android 3.0 a.k.a Honeycombe.
‘2011 is the year of the tablet,’ said Shawn Dubravak, chief economist at the American Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Dubravak predicted the launch of over 100 new tablet makes. But he doubted that all of them will make it to the markets.
The price of Motorola Xoom has not yet been announced.
