There hasn’t been a real revolution in the UK energy industry since the 1970′s, when the changeover was made from coal to natural gas as the primary fuel for the nation. Now, however, we are on the brink of the Smart Revolution, which will completely change the way in which your meter works, and waves a long overdue farewell to those curse of the householder; estimated bills.

Leading the way is energy giant British Gas, who have made a promise that every household in the UK will have a smart meter by 2019. To start the ball rolling, they are currently installing over 160,000 British Gas Smart Meter units in British homes. These meters are the most innovative and technologically advanced on the market, and no longer is your meter just used to record your consumption.

These meters offer automatic meter reading, thus ending estimated bills, and you can actually control your usage online, through a user friendly monitor or even via a smartphone app. With this control comes more choices, and the opportunity to reduce your energy consumption, giving you vital economic savings, as well as benefitting the environment.

It is little wonder that this revolution is being led by British Gas, as one of the largest energy suppliers they are also in a position of great trust and are seen as trend setters. This effectively means that where they go others follow, which is great news for smart meters. These innocuous items will sit quietly, tucked out of the way, but you have the knowledge that the Smart Meter is silently working on reducing your energy bills.

As this is the most exciting leap forward in energy for several decades, you will undoubtedly want to see and hear more about it. British Gas have set up various ways of doing this; videos are available for viewing on YouTube like the one below, their smart meter website is to be found HERE, or you can find out more through social media by logging onto their Facebook page, and following them on Twitter @BritishGas.

BlackBerry fans eagerly awaiting the launch of the company’s new smartphone using the BlackBerry 10 operating system should head to the technology site CrackBerry. The gadget lovers have managed to get hold of a leaked slide from an internal presentation, showing the new device in all its glory.

Using a RIM platform that has been the talk of the technology industry for some time now, the device (code-named London in the leaked slide) could give both BlackBerry and RIM a vital boost at a time when both their reputations are flagging; RIM’s more so than the perennially popular BlackBerry.

The “London” device was briefly and tantalisingly teased at an industry event earlier this year, but actual details were thin on the ground until CrackBerry got hold of their mysterious presentation slide and also learned that the device is being tested with a 1.5-GHz dual-core TI OMAP 5 processor.

Commentators at CrackBerry and other technology websites reckon the choice of name is not a coincidence and the “London” will be on sale in theUKbefore it hits the stores in theUS. However, no-one is willing to hazard a guess as to when that might be. The only thing the experts are willing to speculate is that the “London” will probably be run with Verizon or Sprint when it is launched in the US, and is likely to be available through carriers operating on CDMA networks.

Until the actual release date, eager fans will have to make do with the snippets revealed in the leak; details such as the all-touchscreen design, a major change of direction for BlackBerry who had always insisted that users wanted to keep the full keyboard that have been an integral part of their devices.

Featuring cameras on the front and rear, “London” is more like a conventional smartphone than any previous BlackBerry design and it will be interesting to see what the hardcore fans make of the device when it is launched later in 2012.

Many people are very excited about the new Nokia phone to hit the market as it is going to probably be one of the leading devices available for those who are interested in multimedia on their smart phone.

The Nokia Lumia 900 comes with a 4.3 inch screen and the Nokia Music software already installed. If you want to take the most advantage of this new phone and its musical capabilities then it is going to be important to buy a good set of headphones to go with it.

The phone does come with headphones but these are not going to be able to do the sound on the system justice. It is possible to upgrade the phone to enjoy better sounds from the Nokia Purity Stereo Headset. This upgrade is quite expensive and nearly £70 but it does offer audio at a greatly improved rate.

The headphones also fit very nicely in your ear and they do a good job of blocking out sound from elsewhere. The base on these headphones is also excellent but despite this manages to offer a balanced sound. As these headphones are designed for use with the phone, they also come with a built-in microphone so you can talk hands-free.

Another option is a bit more expensive at £135 and this is the Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset. These offer a much richer sound and because of this they are quite a bit larger than the other headphones mentioned.

However they are not in ear headphones and rest over your ears which makes long-term listening a more comfortable experience. The sound from these headphones is incredibly well-balanced and the technology utilised in them is exceptional. They also fold up very nicely into a carrying case so they are portable and will remain undamaged.

Motorola has brought us the Defy and the Defy+ and now they’re shrunk the format down to bring us the Defy Mini, with a 3.2 inch HVGA display screen protected by Gorilla Glass so it’s not indestructible but tough enough for most users. It’s also protected by the snug-fitting dust-proof rubber back and it’s IP67 certified for water resistance up to a metre depth.

The Defy Mini has 512MB of RAM, it’s powered by a 600MHz CPU, and it offers a 3 megapixel snapper for video calls and a VGA front-facing camera that’s not too impressive if photography is your main interest. The colours are not as bright as you might want, but considering the price, not bad at all.

The battery is supposed to last for 10 hours talk and 21 days standby time.

Motorola’s press release says this Android powered smartphone will also keep track of your location and point you to the next stop with its GPS navigation. Plus you have instant access to Google (you have to have a g-mail address) to download games, music, books and apps from Google Play. It also says you can take this gizmo anywhere you go, implying jungle treks to Iditarod races.

The Mini has seven home screens that can all be customized, and some nifty widgets like the one that sorts all your contacts into favourites based on which ones you call the most, and sets up their profiles so the size on the card is relative to the amount of contact. Watch out for this one if you’re spending more time with with a ‘pal’ than you are with your better half.

There’s also a Motorola social networking app, but it’s rather slow; you may as well stay with Facebook or Twitter apps, as they’re included anyway. A recent announcement on Techprezz says the Defy Mini is now available in the UK for £162 including VAT.

You can look at all the reviews of the LG Optimus L3 and you’d gather that style is one of its most important attributes. This is only partly true; LG’s L-series line is definitely style-conscious but they’re looking to get a significant corner of the market with a lot of technology crammed into a little almost-budget-priced smartphone.

The Optimus L3 is only 3.2 inches as opposed to the L5 and L7 (at up to 4.3 inches). However it’s a neat little package, with an easy-grip textured plastic finish on the back and shiny edges for a classy metallic look. The screen doesn’t have the best resolution, only 125 ppi with 240×320 pixels, but it fares pretty well both indoors and out.

The Android notification bar is cool as it lets you know when you’ve got messages, and all the buttons react well when pushed, but there are so many, i.e. media controls and the ones to switch between modes like GPS, WiFi etc. that they’re a bit squished.

The L3 comes equipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it has a 3MP snapper on the back, plus an FM radio. It’s also got a microSD card slot and a full connectivity suite. Another big plus is the battery life, good for 36 hours of heavy-duty calling, gaming, photos, music, games and what-all with the signal strength holding up very well.

Basically the L3 is a good pick if you’re looking for low-end price and high-end styling; it’s not over-loaded with ‘brains’ but it has all the expected accoutrements and the price is right. T-Mobile is advertising ‘free from £10.50 a month’ with a 24 month contract.

Samsung have just made the announcement about their latest range of cameras which is going to replace the current range of interchangeable lens cameras which have been on the market for a few years.

This new range of cameras from the company are all going to be able to connect by Wi-Fi to make transferring and uploading pictures very easy. The specifications on the cameras are also going to be impressive with most including a camera sensor of over 20 megapixels. The cameras are also going to be capable of shooting at over eight frames per second and recording full high-definition video.

One of the cameras in the new range, the NX20 has a form factor of a digital SLR and has a similar electronic viewfinder to what was available on the previous model. On the back however is a much improved screen which is now three inches big and it has much more impressive viewing angles in the previous camera.

On the new NX210 is the same screen as on the NX20. As a matter of fact, when you look at these two cameras they don’t appear to be very different from each other. The same is true of the NX200, which was one of the earlier cameras.

One of the nice features about these cameras is that they can be directly linked to a smart phone by Samsung and this means that the phone can act as a viewfinder on the camera and even a remote control.

This is something that other major camera manufacturers, such as Nikon, have started putting into their cameras, but it is something that needs to be purchased as an add-on. Information about the pricing of these cameras has not been released, but it is expected that the company will be making an announcement in the near future.

Nokia have recently announced that they are releasing a new phone that has a camera that has never been seen on a mobile phone before. Nokia claims that the new phone which is called the 808 PureView is going to have a camera with a resolution of 41 megapixels.

This is an enormous number that is significantly greater than any other mobile phone on the market is currently offering. Most top of the line smart phones offer cameras of about eight megapixels, which pale in comparison to Nokia’s new offering.

That said, eight megapixels is more than most people really need in a mobile phone, especially when they are just taking pictures to upload them to social networking sites. Despite what the phone is capable of, Nokia have stated that most users are definitely not going to be utilising the huge number of megapixels and will likely set it at its standard-setting of eight megapixels.

Nokia used to be a hugely dominant force in the mobile phone industry but in recent years their market share has dropped significantly. It is thought that this new addition to their line of mobile phones is largely a publicity stunt to attract more people back to the mobile phone company. Even when you compare this to some of the top-of-the-line digital cameras available from companies such as Nikon and Canon it is impressive.

The mobile phone has also been announced that it is not going to be running the Android software from Google but is instead going to be running Nokia’s own operating system, which is hardly popular among most customers. After the announcement stock in the company dropped five percent, despite the expectation that it would rise. No price has been confirmed yet but it is expected that the phone will retail for around £600.

The Iconia Tab A100 is a very good example of how well the Android Honeycomb can perform on a seven inch screen. This is due to the fact that the Acer A100 is a seven inch tablet that offers the Android 3.2 Honeycomb already installed on it and is the first small tablet to become available in the UK with a small screen. It appears a bit chunky at first glance and its patterned grey chassis does not help the image, but all and all it only weighs about 401g making it a light tablet.

For being a small tablet, the device offers many connection options including a microUSB port, an HDMI port, a slim docking port, and a pair of speaker grilles. On the other end of the tablet are a 3.5mm headphone port and a power button. Hidden under the top of the device is a plastic flap that covers a small microSD card. One of the nice aspects of the phone is the fact that the power button is easy to get to so even when the screen is powered down it is easy simply hit it and turn the phone back on.

Pre-installed on the phone is the Nemo Player that takes care of handling video playback and music and also allows you to view photos that are either taken on the tablet or imported onto the tablet from the SD Card. It also offers a video wall that holds your favorites so that you can quickly jump ahead to you favorite videos making viewing easy.

It does have the best media manager, but it will do and the battery life is great without too many crashes which is pretty good when it comes to a device that runs on the Android operating system.

The AcerTravelMate 8481T is a surprisingly solid business laptop given the fact that the very slim gadget only weighs in at a low 1.7kg. At first glance it certainly looks like a tough model given its dark metal finish. This is just the tip of the iceberg however when it comes to explaining why the laptop is so well made for business travel.

One of the top reasons why it is a great laptop to use on the go is due to the fact that it is very comfortable to use on a regular basis because the keyboard is well spaced and the Backspace Shift, and Return keys are all large making it easy to type with. As a result, from an ergonomics standpoint, the keypad is very easy to use and is great for composing long documents from start to finish.

The battery life on the Acer TravelMate is also astounding as it managed to last about 11 hours during the MobileMark 2007 tests. This is due to the fact that it operates with a low power processor and also has an eight cell lithium battery that gently clicks underneath of the laptop. Even better, due to the way the battery is shaped it ends ups serving as a stand for the laptop so that it leans towards you making it even easier to type.

There is of course one problem with the odd shape of the battery, and that is the fact that it is not so easy to pack away easily into a laptop bag making it a bit bulkier than the weight would suggest. Still, overall its low weight, great keyboard, and great processor will make it an amazing tool to use for business making it one of the best choices out there on the market.

In many ways people who buy the new Samsung Series 7 Chronos laptop will feel that it is quite similar in its design to the machines that have been created by Apple. The device is unquestionably a premium product and it has been targeted to users who want a powerful Windows PC and it should be a viable alternative if they were considering buying a Mac.

The quality of the components in the device is excellent and there are also many things which will make you praise the designers who created this machine. The processor is very powerful as it is using a Intel Core i7 quad core, which is the same as the entry level device by Apple.

There is also an excellent discrete graphics card with one gigabyte of dedicated memory. The computer also has a large hard drive with 750 gigabytes of space and eight gigabytes of RAM which make it a very fast machine.

Testing has showed that the device is capable of booting Windows 7 in around 30 seconds. This is a very impressive figure even when the operating system has been cleanly installed. Of course, once you start adding programmes this boot time is going to slow down a bit.

The finish on the computer is very attractive and the idea that the battery cannot be removed has come to this device as well. While this might initially seem to be a problem, the battery lasts so long that you often won’t find yourself really needing to replace it very regularly. Testing of the battery has indicated that from a full charge the computer will last for over eight hours before needing to be plugged in.
