Intel have made no secret over the past couple of months of their intentions towards the smartphone market, and that they intend to grab a hefty slice of the pie that is currently monopolized by ARM.

The first step in this plan was in their formation of a unit totally dedicated to tackling the valuable mobile market, then along came details of the Medfield chipset and look at their test device. Intel are rightly proud of the Medfield, their latest power efficient, system on a chip that has been specifically designed to be used within tablets and smartphones.

The unbranded device which uses Android as its OS is available to manufacturers who can then adapt the design to suit their own use. The report in the Korea Times has suggested that LG have done this, and will be using CES2012 to showcase their effort. If this comes to fruition, the Korean manufacturer will have produced the first Intel powered smartphone in the world.

Although the newspapers sources seem confident enough, representatives of LG say differently, and that it is more likely that the company will be promoting the ‘reference design’ hardware with financial support from Intel. This has been a longstanding successful strategy from Intel, whose Intel Inside Program offsets the costs of advertising as long as the manufacturers use the Intel logo, and it could work as well for mobile as it does for PC’s.

Monday saw an announcement from Lenovo that they have a touchscreen ultrabook that by simply flipping the display can be turned into a tablet. The IdeaPad Yoga has a 13.3in screen and the ultrabook was demonstrated during a Lenovo press conference at the CES in Las Vegas running on the upcoming Windows 8 OS from Microsoft.

Yang Yuanqing, the CEO and chairman of Lenovo, said during the press conference that you can simply fold it from a PC into a tablet, or from a tablet into a PC. The ultrabook is very slim, making it easy and comfortable to hold when in tablet mode. The unit is 1.6cm thick and weighs 1.4kg, and, according to Lenovo, provides 8 hours of battery life from a single charge.

Yuanqing also said t hat the IdeaPad Yoga will be on general sale once Windows 8 has been released, and whilst the date has been pencilled in for later in 2012, no official release date as been announced as yet.

Ultrabooks are the latest category of slim, lightweight laptops and are backed heavily by Intel, who are trying to revive the flagging PC market by injecting it with new designs in laptops. Earlier on Monday, Intel had said that any future ultrabooks would implement the features you see on tablets, and have longer battery life, voice recognition and touch screens.

Lenovo didn’t share any more details about the IdeaPad Yoga, but Yuanqing warned that the PC market wasn’t going anywhere soon, and that innovation would continue in PC just as it was doing in tablets and smartphones. He said that many people believed that the traditional PC was coming to the end of its life, but his company believed the opposite.

It is expected that the IdeaPad Yoga will come with the new and upcoming Intel Core processors, code namedIvyBridge, and will provide both a faster application and better graphics performance. The ultrabook was only one of the many devices which :Lenovo intends to introduce at CES, these include voice controlled 3D smart televisions complete with Android 4.0, smartphones and tablets, one of which has a quad core processor.

The first tablet device by Apple came on sale in 2010 and it is expected that the growth of tablet computers is going to continue, at least according to the finance company Deloitte.

The head of Deloitte Technology is Jolyon Barker who has commented, “Since the tablet market first launched in 2010 there has been an explosion in interest that shows little sign of slowing. It is expected that this year around 5 million tablet devices are going to be sold to people who already have at least one other tablet device.

This is going to generate over £1 billion for technology businesses. Tablet devices are penetrating the market faster than any other device in history and it seems this is set to continue.” Tablet models are being released this year by such big names as Asus, Samsung and Sony and they are all hoping to take some of the market share away from the iPad by Apple.

Retailers, network operators and those creating content for tablet devices are expecting the fact that people might own more than one tablet device is a complicating factor in the market. Deloitte also predict that the number of applications available for these devices will dramatically increase this year.

The new piece of software is called TaskMaster Companion, and it is going to work on a variety of mobile devices including tablets and smart phones.

The managing director of the company is Steve Reynolds and he has said, “We’ve been working on a cross-platform program for a long time and we have devised something that is going to work well with evolving mobile technologies.

User experience is something we’re having a key focus on and this has resulted in us redesigning several components and the software so it works well with the operating systems of all current tablets and smartphone devices.”

TaskMaster Companion will help companies reduce hardware and infrastructure costs as employees will be able to use advanced tools in the field. The new device allows businesses to use new forms of technology to allow people to work in the field and utilises the fact that many people carry smart phones and tablets around with them everywhere.

Many people have been critical of it however, meaning it hasn’t been as successful as expected.

Microsoft are expected to launch Windows 8 onto the tablet market later this year but many people are unsure of the effect this is going to have on the market. The best efforts of leading competitors such as HTC, Samsung and Motorola have been unable to have a significant effect on Apple’s market dominance and many people are thinking that the Windows device is going to have a hard job breaking into the market.

It is also expected that tablet devices running Windows 8 are going to be very expensive, with pricetags expected to be around £600. Many people are expecting that this high price will mean that people see it as simply too expensive and will go for alternative devices.

Analysts are predicting that Microsoft and Intel are going to become quite aware that this price is too high, much like those producing Android systems did around a year ago. This is an indication of just how far Microsoft is behind in the game.

However the Dell Inspiron One is a machine that packs the punch of the desktop but comes in a much smaller case. It is retailing at £799 which is much less than an equivalent machine available from Apple.

A relatively new feature of all in one PCs is the addition of a touch screen and this is something that is being heavily marketed by the company. The touch screen does not lack any of the resolution that you might expect of a high-end desktop and there is a high-definition screen capable of 1080p resolution and is 23 inches big. This size means that many people will be happy to watch films on it and it is even capable of being mounted on a wall.

Touch is not the only way to interface with the device and there is also a keyboard and mouse provided with it. The computer comes with an i5 processor which is perfect for is capabilities, and provides quad core computing at 2.5 GHz and is capable of up to 3.3 GHz when run on a single thread.

If you are looking to buy a cheaper model of this computer then there is one available, it is not running an i5 processor however, but a Pentium G6 20, which is essentially the same as an i3 without the hyper threading and it is slightly slower.

Despite this it is still capable of integrating with high-definition graphics from Intel. The higher priced machine might well be worth it as the amount of RAM you get is significantly more at 6GB. There is also plenty of storage available on the devices as there is a 1TB hard disk included which is becoming more and more common in mid-range devices.

We have the tales of unwanted presents, the tales of the bumper January sales, the tales of people stabbing others over the last pair of cut price trainers, and the obligatory articles that all start the same; ‘getting fit in the new year’.

As well as the articles there is the wave of new gadgets that promise the instant weight loss you have always dreamed of, and this year is no different. Step forward the aesthetically pleasing FitBit Ultra weight loss tracker, the wellness gizmo that has taken the US by storm.

The FitBit Ultra is a minute dongle shaped like a USB key and you clip it onto a necklace or belt or something of that kind. The dongle has been designed well, and is pretty sleek with a matt black finish and clip design. There is just one single button to skip through the hidden display, which then reveals the time, how many stairs you have climbed, how many steps you have taken, and the bit we all want, how many calories have been burned.

By holding in the button you an also log such activities as skiing or even sleeping. The FitBit Ultra uses a state of the art altimeter to track distance, steps, stairs climbed and sleep patterns, and the display gives feedback in real time. This altimeter technology works together with an accelerometer to track and differentiate movement, so it knows if you caught the lift or climbed the stairs.

FitBit Ultra has its own website at Fitbit.com where it has comparisons of climbing activities such as famous landmarks like Machu Picchu, the Eiffel Tower and the 389 steps of Big Ben. This gadget is great fun, and very useful, with an RRP of £79.99 it looks set to emulate the success it has achieved across the pond.

According to a recent survey conducted by Geek Squad, men who are having difficulty in understanding how to work their new Christmas gadget are twice as unlikely to ask for help as women. The study claims that men refuse to admit that they are having problems sussing out what to do with their new techno gadgets, but women will easily admit they are stumped and gladly accept health.

The Geek Squad survey revealed that 28% of men would only ask for help as a last resort once they have thrown in the towel and admitted they can’t work their gadget. However, according to the Daily Mail, a mere 16% of women said that they would refuse help.

It was also found by the survey that 26% got frustrated and irritated on Christmas Day while trying to get their head around the complicated instruction manual and what it was telling them to do. Sam Lawton is an agent with Geek Squad and he says of the findings that men have a sense of pride and don’t like to admit when something has them stumped, and much more likely that women to say the gadget was broken rather than admit defeat.

Sam also says that he knows of men who would take the product back to the shop and say that it was broken when the simple truth is they don’t understand how it works. He added that they get a lot more frustrated than women at their inability to make something work.

Customer service phone systems need to have advanced features built into them in order to accurately distribute the calls based on the actual volume of the calls and the needs of the callers. In order to make sure that your clients have an overall positive impression of your business by the time their call is completed you need to make sure that your calls are routed in an efficient and quick manner which is one reason that you may want to take a look at network based ACD phone systems for your company so that the actual process of being routed does not frustrate or anger them.

The main goal of all customer service departments is to serve the customer and ensure that by the time a customer ‘walks away’ they are satisfied with the help they received; therefore, you do not want to put them through the ringer as they are transferred around a phone network in search of someone that may be able to help them. No one likes to spend time on a call routing circuit, and there is little doubt that your customers will not like it as well, so having a service that routes customers exactly as needed is one great way to prevent this from occurring.

However, you do not have to worry about this when you use an ACD network because calls can be routed and sorted in many different ways, allowing for them to reach their expected destination in a quick and easy manner. Automatic call distribution is also sometimes defined as skill based routing given the fact that calls are routed based on judging the difficulty of a caller’s needs and the knowledge level of available agents to make the best fit that will result in smooth customer service operations.

It is easy to see how this type of distribution could be useful if you take a closer look at how routing the phone calls using ACD would occur. For instance, if you have a group of customer reps that are very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to returns you would want them to automatically receive any phone calls that have to do with returns, but during busy times you need to have other forms of back up to help prevent long wait times. In this case, you would be able to efficiently use your staff to help round out all aspects of the call experience while also making sure that you are using your staff strengths correctly.

This is just one example of one skill, but with proper ACD set up every staff member will have their skills rated and are assigned an area of expertise that would judge how their phone calls are routed. This way you only have to use inexperienced staffers during peak times to help smooth wait times, but the rest of the time your customers get instant and the best service that your business is able to provide which is not such a bad deal.
