According to a new poll commissioned by Sky HD the average Briton only accesses about half of the functions that come installed on their gadgets.

Out of the 3,000 people who were included in one of the polls, around half did not know that in order for their HD television to produce a HD viewing experience it had to be connected to a HD device such as a HD service or Blu-ray DVD player.

The survey also found that although 47% of women will ask for help with gadgets only about 25% of men will. Women were also more likely to read the product manual with 66% noting they do, while only 54% of men stated they routinely look at the manual.

A bit more on the comical side, it seems even IT professionals fall victim to frustration and the old ways of a Nintendo cartridge, with 10% admitting they will hit a gadget in order to attempt to get it working.

The Sky HD survey also discovered that on average a British consumer has over £3000 worth of electronics in their home but the amount that people spend for their gadgets versus the value of the functions that they know how to use is over £52b.

Editor of the gadget magazine, Stuff, Fraser Macdonald, said it is astonishing how much money people throw away when they fail to use their devices fully such as in the case of a HD television set that fails to reach its full potential due to the lack of an HD box or Blu-ray player.

Review site Retrevo decided to release survey results in the wake of the New York City Greener Gadgets conference about how consumer’s purchasing habits are influenced by green factors. To not too many people’s surprise, the answer is not very much, but there is still a glint of hope underneath the results.

A gadget can rank as ‘green’ if there has been a substantial effort during its production and supply chain to keep its environmental footprint down to a minimum. Some of the factors that are measured for impact that are included in the process are waste production, energy consumption, the toxicity of the materials used in production, energy consumption, and how well its components can be recycled.

According to the Retrevo survey, 42% reported that they do not feel guilty if they purchase a product that is not green because they do not care in the first place. Another 16% said that they do not care due to the fact that they are more concerned with the price of the gadget.

In terms of how many consumers pay attention to certifications that products are green, 35% of those surveyed under the age of 25 answered yes and 55% of those over the age of 25 said yes.

The survey also asked respondents if they are aware of how to buy a green product out of which 40% said yes but do not usually bother, 21% said no but are interested in learning and a final 18% said no and that they have no interest in learning.

With notably bizarre advertising slogans like “Crafted to indulge the clawing beasts within”, the Apocalypse range is designed for anyone with a taste for the eccentric.

Although a specific meaning for each symbol is listed on the website, the designer commented that these descriptions are intentionally left as “a nexus for the imagination to draw from”, leaving plenty of room for personal interpretation and meaning.

The S8500 Wave looks like a typical smart phone from the first glance, but upon deeper investigation the tiny gadget has a completely open sourced mobile platform and incredible high end specs that the everyday mobile user is not used to seeing.

Samsung has confirmed that the Wave will make use of a 1GHz processor, which is another proprietary experiment and shows how Samsung was initially able to make their name in the mobile market.
The extra processing boost will place the Wave on par with other high end mobiles such as the WinMo HTC HD2 and the Google Phone Nexus One.

It also comes equipped with a five megapixel camera complete with video recording that is capable of reaching up to 720p HD. Also notable is the AMOLED touch screen that measures in at a 3.3 inches making it slightly smaller than the iPhone and capable of displaying some of the clearest and brightest images to rival smartphone competitors.

For the most part, the Wave has a nice summary package of specs as well with HDSPA, WiFi support, 2GB of internal memory, and micro SD card compatibility.

Finally, the last magic component is the Bada operating system which has been kept pretty quiet outside of the fact that it is open source and is supported by a numerous among of developers.

Reports show that the internet giant is working on mobile translation software that will bring people from separate sides of the world together allowing them to talk in real time, even if they are not able to speak a common language.

If Google is able to come up with a way to overcome the results of mechanical translations and place live translation into mobile phones than they just may be capable of creating a super phone.

At the moment the software is still in a conceptual phase but given how many big steps Google has already made forward, such as online text to text translation, it may not be as long as most people thought to see the actual technology make it onto the new wave of smartphones.

Head of Google’s translation services, Franz Och, stated that speech to speech translation is possible in theory and will be brought to life in just a few years. He went on to explain that even though everyone has a different pitch, voice, and accent, the software will work because the recognition system will be personalized to the user allowing the mobile software to get familiar with your voice from past queries.

Google will need to get hard at work on the project however as a company named Sakhr announced in June of 2009 that it is working on an Arabic natural language processing system.
