The demanding Project Aces development team at NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. in Japan weren’t satisfied. They wanted more from the series. They wanted planes that tore apart limb from limb right in front of your face, spewing their oil lifeblood across the sky. They wanted to scrape the streets and dodge the steel skyscrapers of real world cities at blistering speeds, in an enthralling war drama that spanned the globe with a web of intrigue. They wanted players to pick up the controller and become deadly combat pilots in seconds, pulling off breathtaking kills at impossible speeds, and doing battle online in a multiplayer sky littered with fiery supersonic debris. What they wanted was steel carnage in the sky.

The result is not a sequel in the multi-million selling smash hit ACE COMBAT series, but a complete rebirth, a phoenix from the ashes flying at three times the speed of sound. The Project Aces team is building ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON from the ground up, with new technology fuelling their passionately realised vision of a game that puts players in the dark heart of the fight like no aerial combat game has done before.

Is 3D Gaming the Future?

For those of a certain age, stereoscopic 3D gaming is nothing new. Sega were the first company to attempt 3D gaming with their Master System and came with a pair of very dodgy 3D glasses that had limited success. Nintendo followed suit with their effort of 3D gaming with the rather unsuccessful Virtual Boy which came with 3D goggles that didn’t help enhance the 3D gaming experience one bit.

Even after these attempts of 3D gaming, there is still a sense that now is the first time 3D gaming has really come into its own. The equipment we’re seeing come out now is fantastic and incredibly impressive, especially compared to those that dared show their faces in the early 80s. People’s expectations have risen nowadays and they now know exactly what they want from their 3D tech.

Another reason for these increased expectations is that there is more of a hardcore games market around at the moment and they’re becoming more and more interested in HD graphics and the new tech that‘s coming out now. One possible answer for why there is this so much interest in the 3D gaming world now is due to the publicity that 3D work is getting with the film industry’s renewed interest in stereoscopic film.

However, it’s probably more likely that this new found passion is because the technology has finally started to take off; people can now go to their local cinema and watch a 3D film that really drags them into the film they’re watching, without the need for the flimsy red and green eyewear. To prove even more that the 3D market is starting to make it, true gaming fans are now able to enjoy 3D gaming on their home PCs and laptops with the NVIDIA’s 3D Vision gaming system.

NVIDIA’s 3D Vision is described by the company as; “A combination of high-tech wireless glasses and advanced software, 3D Vision automatically transforms hundreds of PC games into full stereoscopic 3D. In addition, view movies and digital photographs in eye popping 3D.” It also now supports full HD 1080p.

The only issue with this new gaming system, however, is that you will need a display that is capable of operating at a 120Hz refresh rate, and the problem is that there are very few TVs available that can manage this. Not many of the TVs out there capable of this have much bigger than a 22in panel or more than a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, and most also require a dual-link DVI cable to enable the 120 Hz refresh rate to work. NVIDIA does include all of the necessary bits and pieces needed to make the 3D capabilities look great.

If you are tempted by this new fantastic 3D technology then the best thing to do is to compare prices as it can be very expensive with it being so new and innovative. Starting this week, subscribers of T-post will be able to wear their graphic T-shirt in front of any web camera and play a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors against a computer-generated arm that extends from the shirt itself.

Pulled from the headlines, and interpreted by Swedish designer Marc Strömberg, this innovative issue of T-post uses augmented reality to comment on the future of college education. From exotic dancer research and marijuana horticulture to popular TV-show logic and, you guessed it, underwater basket weaving, college just isn’t what it used to be. It used to be that sex, drugs and recreation were extracurricular activities. Today, they are part of the actual coursework.

While we may all have to wait to see if T-post’s prediction of higher education will come true, and Rock, Paper, Scissors is used to teach university students the art of business negotiation, a new trend in fashion begins now, thanks again to T-post and their innovative use of augmented reality.

Large Screen Nintendo DSi XL available in the UK from 5th March 2010

The ‘go large’ version of the Nintendo DS console is due to be available in the UK from 5th March 2010.

The Nintendo DSi Xl will be available in two colours – wine red and dark brown – and will feature two 4.2-inch screens, which is nearly twice as large as the original DSi.

One of the obvious benefits of larger screens is larger game graphics, which make the DSi XL much easier to watch and use. Coupled with its larger pen-like stylus, the DSi XL makes handheld gaming much more comfortable and natural. With larger screens and a larger stylus, the DSi XL is expected to appeal to older generations who may be new to gaming. The new screens’ much wider viewing angle is also expected to be welcomed by families who will more easily be able to share games and applications like the popular interactive books in the Flips range.

The DSi XL comes pre-loaded with some of Nintendo’s top DS software including ‘A Little Bit of… Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: Arts Edition’, Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function and the Nintendo DSi Browser, which enables easy access to the Internet from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection.

In addition to these new features, the DSi XL has all the capabilities of the original Nintendo DSi, including the ability to create, customise and share photos and to listen to and play music.

Alice in Wonderland on the DS, one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year, coincides with the release of the new Nintendo handheld, with the game also available on March 5th.

Playstation 4 is the dream gadget

The latest poll from TechRadar suggests that more readers would want a Playstation 4 over the next version of the Xbox although the top gadget on people’s wish list was actually the whimsical pen that turns into a flying car that the magazine editors threw in as a joke.

Still, out of the 3,000 votes 35% of people said that they would like a next generation gaming console over any other gadget.

As mentioned, the Playstation 4 came in second with about a fifth of the votes, with the Xbox pulling in 11% of the vote in third place.

Surprisingly, a next edition Wii only took in about four percent which suggests that most of the readers of TechRadar are serious gamers not those who enjoy a game here and there.

In terms of computers, Apple took the cake with the top four spots and 8% of the vote for the upcoming rumoured Apple Tablet and a new updated version of the iPhone. The Android followed closely behind with 7% of the vote.

Six percent of those polled said they wanted an Ultra-HD television with another five percent craving Windows 8. Finally, a quad core notebook rounded out the list with one percent of the vote.

When it comes to choosing what type of broadband bundles for gaming you will need in order to get the most out of your gaming experience, so that you do not spend half of your game time waiting for it to load, there are several tips and pointers to keep in mind.

As most people know, one of the first things you should look at from a broadband company is the speed which they can provide to you. Speed can mean the difference between a low latency that keeps you behind every other player on the server, and from being the one on the server that everyone wishes they could be.

The best thing to do if you are looking for broadband speed is to head online and find a broadband comparison tool (there are multitudes at various gaming sites) and enter your postcode to find out which providers can offer you what levels of speed.

Ideally you should aim for a UK broadband provider that gives speeds of at least 4mb or higher, because any less, and your connection may not be fast enough to make the game worth playing. For the most part you will find higher speeds with the more recognizable broadband providers such as Sky Broadband Max, O2, and Virgin Media, due to the fact they use fibre optic and ADSL 2+ broadband technologies.

After you narrow down what speeds are available in your area when looking at broadband for gaming, your next step is to choose the proper usage allowance for your needs. Although some standard allowance packages offer one to two GB of downloads, most games require around 1GB of updates every month, which will quickly eat up the smaller allowance deals, especially if you have a family in your home as well.

Thus, the proper broadband for gaming usage allowance should start at around 20+GB of monthly allowance, unless you can find a provider with top speeds that offers unlimited usage, and the price is within your budget. Keep in mind though that even unlimited allowance plans have fair usage clauses attached to them, so check out what your limits are in advance before signing into a contract.

Finally, after you cover the basics of what provider and package to choose, there is just one more recommendation that will make your experience perfect. Plug your console or gaming computer directly into the broadband router utilizing an Ethernet cable. It’s not always as convenient, but the trade off is that you will always have a signal that is as strong as possible.
