A TV that has recently been released by Philips is the flagship in their range and is 46 inches wide and is currently the only television in the world that utilises a Moth Eye filter. This television is encased in an aluminium bodywork that makes it look as if it is worth its expensive pricetag.

It also has the significant advantage that it uses direct lighting. Direct lighting is where the light source comes from directly behind the screen rather than being located at the edge like is common with LED screens.

The television retails at over £2300 and utilises the latest 3-D technology by the company. If you don’t want to pay so much there is a range of televisions below this but they have a less powerful processor and they do not use direct lighting.

The Moth Eye filter is a special kind of technology and this is the first television to make use of it. On the screen there are tiny nodules that mean the television does not have a reflection, they get their name because there are very similar nodules found on the eye of a moth. The advantage of the technologies you don’t get reflections but also that viewers perceive a greater range and contrast.

Many people who’ve been able to see the television before it was released have done so at technology shows and it has certainly been a standout attraction. The use of the technology to prevent reflection has meant that even in a brightly lit technology show the screen holds its ground. The technology is very effective at increasing the contrast, compared with a similar television does not utilise the technology the contrast is 10 times greater.

The design of the television is very impressive and it is a very attractive piece of technology. The finish on it seems very good and even the standard speakers that come with the television look exceptional. Unfortunately the television can’t be mounted on a wall without being placed on a stand, while they stand has been engineered to look very nice, most people won’t want it to appear underneath the television at all.

2011 has definitely been a year of very thin televisions and because of this this flagship television from Philips feels distinctly large. This is because of the direct light technology that is encased within it and this requires more space than the side lighting which is seen on LED TVs.

The connectivity of the television is exceptional and there are numerous input ports that support any device that you could want. There is also a built-in wireless chip so you can link the television into your network without having to attach any additional gear. The network option also means that you can browse the Internet from the television and Philips have included a platform for doing this. The browsing platform is much better than those you find on competitor sets.

There are several apps that come with the television and these include the BBC iPlayer which can be used for watching videos on the internet. Other popular apps include Twitter, Facebook, Picassa, Cartoon Network, and Euronews. One of the most useful applications to install is the cloud based movie rental and purchase service, AceTrax, which will always ensure you always have a movie to enjoy.

We’ve all seen the adverts, usually featuring close-ups of frogs in the rainforest and raindrops on leaves, but just how much difference does HD TV really make to our viewing pleasure? And what makes HD TV so dramatically different from regular television? Here we take a look at the latest TV must have and explain the basics. You can find out more about HD television over at Sky.com too.

HD TV stands for high-definition television. As the name implies, HD televisions offer higher definition images and higher definition sound quality than a standard television. The biggest different between standard TV and HD is that HD TV’s are packed with twice as many horizontal lines of resolution than standard sets. This, along with the fact that HD TV sets also allow for a far larger range of colours to be displayed, results in a far sharper and more realistic televisual image. HD televisions can be used to enjoy HD TV shows, HD DVD’s and HD video games to full effect.

If you want to upgrade to higher definition television, you’re going to need some equipment, namely an HD-ready TV. HD-compatible TV’s are built to accept HD-format input and they then display it at a minimum of 720 lines of progressive-scan or noninterlaced video. When you’re out shopping for your fancy new flatscreen set, you’ll find HD-ready TV’s easy to spot thanks to the HD-ready logo.

Now that you have a TV built to display HD images, you’ll need a receiver that’s built to receive and process the HD signal. The easiest way is to purchase an HD-ready television that comes with a built-in HD receiver. This way you’ll have less cables tangled up down the back of your TV stand too. Alternatively, you can opt for a Freesat or Freeview HD set top box. These set top boxes don’t come with any kind of subscription package like a Sky dish, so there’s no monthly fee, all you need to do is purchase one and it’s ready to use.

With your new HD TV and receiver up and running, you’re now able to view all the regular channels you’re used to (although these won’t be high definition), as well as the growing number of dedicated HD channels, including a host of sports channels. However, just because a programme is showing on an HD channel this doesn’t mean that the show itself has been filmed in HD. For a show to be truly high definition quality, it needs to have been filmed using HD cameras too. A surprisingly small amount of HD programming is actually filmed in HD at the moment, but the number of truly HD TV shows is growing steadily.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ20 Digital Camera (also called the DMC-ZS10 in the USA) is the latest version of Panasonic’s popular travel zoom camera – the Lumix TZ10. Like its predecessor this compact camera looks like it’s going to be winning everyone over, primarily because it has one of the best optical zoom powers you’ll find in a compact camera. Sure, the rest of the specs are truly impressive, but its zooming capabilities will put any compact digital camera to shame, so much so that we can easily forgive its rather chunky (compared to other compact cameras) appearance.

As mentioned above, the Lumix TZ20 has an excellent optical zoom range just as the TZ10 does. What wasn’t mentioned above though is that it actually improves on that range making the 12x zoom lens in the TZ10 pale in comparison. Instead of just a 12x zoom, the Lumix TZ20 is capable of an astounding 16x optical zoom thanks to its 24mm ultra wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens. Between the 16x optical zoom capability and the 24mm wide-angle lens, you can bet that you’ll have a much wider viewing space, allowing you to capture as broad a picture as you want of the farthest objects spot.

Even more impressive perhaps, is the fact that the 16x optical zoom does not work for image capture alone, but is also available in movie recording. This means that you don’t have to limit yourself to stunning still images of faraway objects, but can capture even the farthest of events unfold through a fully zoomed video capture. And with the separate one-touch movie record button now located at the top surface of the camera, you can easily switch to video recording without having to put down your camera.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ20 zooming capacity doesn’t end with its 16x optical zoom lens either, it also boasts of being capable of up to 21x zoom via the Intelligent Zoom. The Intelligent Zoom makes use of the Intelligent Resolution Technology, which extends the zoom ratio by about 1.3x while ensuring that the picture quality doesn’t suffer. However, you should note that zooming in beyond the 16x optical zoom range will mean picture resolutions of less than the maximum 14.1 megapixels, albeit still resulting in really sharp images. Now this is a feature you wont often find on other digital cameras.

If you do want to zoom in beyond even the 21x that the Intelligent Zoom function supports, you can actually do so thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom function that extends the camera’s zoom power to as much as 33.8x. This zoom power is made possible by using the centre part of the 1/2.33-type MOS sensor. Note though that images captured using the Extra Optical Zoom function will have resolutions of 3-megapixels or less.

Zooming in is also a breeze with the TZ20 thanks to the camera’s touchscreen operation.

With the rather overwhelming zoom power of this camera, you can bet that it lives up to the name that Panasonic dubbed it – the Super Zoom Digital Camera.

An Advertising Feature

3D devices, from TV sets such as the LG 3D LED TV and the Samsung LCD 3D TV, to mobile phones like the LG 42 TV, are forcefully invading the market as manufacturers seem convinced that 3D is the greatest invention in the sphere of home appliances since LCD screens and surround sound systems.

And while TV broadcasters in Europe and the States are preparing to adapt to this new consumer need, the first live 3D transmission of a football game was hosted at the Consumer Electronic Show 2009 with huge success and screened in 80 cinemas in 35 American States, foreshadowing the future of home entertainment.

This need for 3D has been fabricated by the joined efforts of film studios and television manufacturers, as the former invite us to discover and immerse ourselves in the fascinating 3D experience and the latter promise us that we can relive it in the luxury of our homes, if we acquire their products, be it an LG LED TV, a Samsung LCD 3D TV, or any other brand.

In fact, Hollywood began flirting with the idea of 3D over ten years ago and the first blockbuster 3D film ‘Spy Kids 3D’ was released back in 2003. Six years later, James Cameron brought us ‘Avatar’, a movie entirely filmed in 3D.

More and more movie theatres are acquiring the necessary equipment for 3D projection and the expansion of 3D in the home environment has already begun. However, when we consider the rapid development of 3D technology, we realize that comparatively very few 3D movies are being produced and released at the moment. The reason for this delay is the absence of a ‘standard’ coding method for 3D content. Samsung LCD 3D and LG LED TV sets have earned excellent reviews but mass production still requires a widely approved coding standard. Mass production also requires manufacturers’ commitment to a standard viewing method. Investing in millions of 3D TV sets that necessitate special 3D glasses, when we are at the turning point for 3D without glasses, could prove detrimental for manufacturers.

However, everyone is certain that 3D will take off. Bud Mayo, CEO at Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. – a company chartered to transform American movie theatres into large ‘entertainment venues’ with 3D screens that show concerts, football games and other sports and events, has claimed that it took 8 years to get the technology where it is today but estimates that it won’t be long before it is delivered to cinemas.

When that happens, 3D will take the world by storm. To be convinced, we only need to look back to the 2009 transmission of the football game shown in 80 US cinemas. The tickets for all the screens got sold out within hours of release. 3D is therefore predicted to become a cash cow for film studios, which in its turn will also increase dvd & blue ray sales, and advertising revenue for broadcasters.

In home entertainment at least, the biggest step forward in recent times has been in bringing 3D into our living rooms. From a slightly rocky start, this phenomenon is fast gaining momentum and the sales are rocketing. So if you have a 3D television, you obviously need the 3D glasses to view it, and this for many is where the real problems start.

The glasses available up to now have been chunky, uncomfortable and so overpriced that a family has been unable to enjoy 3D viewing as a group. LG are determined to change all that, and have launched a huge marketing campaign called Battle of the Glasses. This is to promote their new range of 3D glasses that they say really will bring a true cinematic experience into your home.

Based on the design that you receive when you go to the cinema, the LG 3D glasses are lightweight, flicker free and you don’t need any batteries. They are giving away 7 pairs free of charge with every LG Cinema 3D television, and promise that should you need any more they will be so cheap to buy that you could kit out the entire street.

The LG 3D glasses come with a unique feature that sets them aside from every other pair of 3D glasses in the market, an ultra wide viewing angle. This effectively means that wherever you are sitting and whatever angle you are at from the television, you will still be able to enjoy the glorious 3D experience in all its splendour.

There are some videos online that you can watch which emphasise the amazing differences between the LG 3D glasses and the others that are available. It’s a very clever campaign for a great product that the 3D viewers at home have been crying out for.

As one model improves to another with more sophisticated technology and manufacturers add new features and functions consumer choice is increased and decision making becomes ever harder.

This is why it is important to think about the specific features that will be most beneficial to your photography and to find out which models include them.

Today, most models of DLSRs come with a set of basic modes and functions to the user. These functions and modes include movie mode, live view, High ISO performance, image stabilisation, dynamic range optimisation and LCD screens.

The movie mode is often the most attractive of the functions offered by manufacturers and high-end brands. The ability to record HD video on digital slr camera allows the consumer to record and upload excellent videos or even to make art house film projects.

Live view with clear and HD picture quality using the LCD screen allows you to compose various shots. This makes it easier to take pictures from tight angles or from the ground where it might be harder to use optical viewfinders.

The High ISO performance allows the photographer to take images in low light conditions which will reduce the loss of detail, colour and pixilation appearing in the image. The camera’s ISO capabilities will help avoid bad image quality.

The image stabilisations are often found in mid-range and the high-end cameras. Images often appear blurry if the camera is moved slightly during exposure. This is often caused by using a slow shutter speed in low light or whilst using a telephoto lens. The image stabilisation technology will help avoid this.

A camera’s dynamic range refers to the spectrum of light the sensor that can capture before either the highlights blow or the shadow areas become indiscernible.

This mode allows photographers to avoid the dilemma of choosing exposure contrast as the Cameras did not allow for highlights and shadows in different light conditions. This allows the user to capture images that have a more natural look.

I can’t say I’ve ever given much thought to what a monkey’s favourite television programme might be, but I’m delighted to say that has all changed. A recent university research project discovered that a three-year-old male rhesus macaque thoroughly enjoyed watching TV footage of a circus elephant, a giraffe and a tiger performing. The study found that when the monkey was watching the animals on TV the frontal lobe area of its brain became vigorously active, which in layman’s terms means he was having a fine old time.

Who knew? I’m not sure what televisions they use in science labs, but I imagine they’re not terribly cutting edge, which got me thinking, Imagine how excited that monkey might have become if he’d had the benefit of watching TV that took advantage of all the latest technology. How about a beautiful, crystal clear, slim line, wall mounted 50 inch LCD TV? Surely that would have had in raptures. Or what about letting him watch 3D TV, where you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action and the pictures literally jump out of the screen into your living room. Although, seeing as a tiger was involved in this experiment that might not have been the best idea.

Thankfully we humans don’t need to conduct such convoluted experiments to get our hands on the best new technology. All we need to do is check out the latest cool 3D and LCD TVs and choose which ones we want. It’s so simple a monkey could do it.

After a few false starts over the years, 3D technology looks to have finally got its act together. After conquering the cinema, it was inevitable that it would come into our homes via our television sets. It should also come as no surprise that electronics giant Samsung is leading the way.

They have spent a lot of years, and an awful lot of money, perfecting this technology before releasing it to the masses. They are understandably extremely excited about showing the way in this potentially lucrative market. Most of us have witnessed that first thrill when a 3D movie bursts on to the big screen; now imagine that wow factor in your living room.

Films, commercials, your favourite TV shows, all in 3D, the impact will be phenomenal. Perhaps the most exciting prospect in sport since we were able to see the colour of our teams strip when colour TV arrived. Imagine yourself at the races, or the Olympics, you could actually feel as if you were there with them. The possibilities are mind blowing, and thanks to Samsung those possibilities are now a reality.

Another aspect which will sell these sets is the effect it will have on gaming. Those Xbox and Playstation games will take on a whole new persona. Less game, more virtual reality, 3D gaming has been knocking on the door for a long time, and it’s now time to let it in and make it welcome.

Samsung are bringing out a full range of 3D televisions, so you will be able to have HD, LED, Plasma, whichever best fits your environment. They will also be in various sizes, from 40” screens right through to 63”. You can understand how the 3D will have the most effect from a larger screen, giving an almost cinematic experience for the viewer. Add to that the picture quality we expect from Samsung and viewers are in for a real treat.

As you can imagine, this kind of technology doesn’t come cheap. It will inevitably drop in price as time goes on, but for those who love to be ahead of the game, money will be no object. The combination of 3D and Samsung quality makes a pretty unbeatable combination.

With the new wave of impressive television technology on the market, 2011 may be a great year to consider upgrading your viewing experience. Consumers now have far more technology choices to consider when looking into upgrading their television sets, and it is worth taking a bit of time to ensure that you make the right choice. You’ll want to consider the pros and cons of plasma TV versus LCD and give some thought to whether you would enjoy 3D or HD viewing. There are many options worth investigating before you take the plunge and splash out on that brand new set.

One choice that presents itself is the choice between a plasma TV and an LCD set. Both types of TV are stylishly sleek and thin and therefore perfectly suited to wall mounting.

Although plasma and LCD technologies both provide stunning, high-definition picture and sound quality, there are some important differences. Plasma TVs use conductive plasma to produce coloured light. This technology produces vivid colours and ultra-clear pictures. Plasma displays are best suited to a light controlled environment, in order to best appreciate the vivid colour displays and deep, rich blacks. They are a particularly good choice for watching movies, where dark scenes are common. The picture can also be viewed well from most angles, so no matter where you are sitting you can enjoy a great quality viewing experience on a plasma TV.

LCD televisions use a fixed pixel structure, with the images generated by a backlight behind the panel. They come in a wide range of sizes that make them a great option no matter what your budget requirements may be. LCD TVs are great for environments where the light conditions cannot be controlled and are particularly suited to video games and computer graphics.

An LG LED TV is a television that utilises even more advanced technology to provide a pin sharp, crisp picture still within an ultra slim design. They use the same fixed pixel structure technology as LCD televisions, simply updated with LED backlights rather than florescent backlights.

There are two types of LED TVs; Edge LED and Full LED. As the names suggest, an Edge LED only has LED lights around the perimeter of the television display, whereas a LG Full LED TV has over 1,000 LED lights behind the TV display.

A Full LED TV will give a far better picture quality than Edge LED TVs, boasting clear images, deep blacks and the most realistic colours available on the market today. LG Full LED TVs are also more eco-friendly then LCD or plasma TVs, making them a greener option for an environmentally conscious consumer and also saving money on electricity bills.

LG Full LED Televisions come in an innovative frameless design that means they can be hung on the wall like an ultra slim picture frame; therefore saving space and looking super stylish, as well as providing a high quality viewing experience.

Another recent technological advance in the world of home viewing is the 3D option. With Sky launching its new 3D channel showing movies, sport, documentaries and specially created 3D programmes, now is the time to upgrade to 3D technology and experience this new way of viewing.

With the increase in popularity of 3D movies at the cinema, more and more DVDs are being released in a 3D format. A 3D television will enable you to have the 3D movie experience in your own living room. 3D is also a great format for playing video games on as it really brings the world to life and allows you to submerse yourself further in the virtual reality of the game.

A LG 3D TV is a great addition to a home cinema system and will transport you and your companions to another world while watching. 3D TVs create depth and perspective using technology that mimics the way our eyes process images naturally. A 3D television will show two slightly different images and the special glasses provided will separate these images and create one 3D display.

There are two different types of 3D TV, that utilise different 3D technologies (passive and active 3D) and LG offers both. A passive 3D TV creates an experience similar to watching a 3D movie at a cinema. The polarised glasses separate the two images displayed by the television and let the correct image filter through the right and left lenses. A great selling point of passive 3D televisions is that, although LG’s passive 3D TV comes with four pairs of 3D glasses, these glasses are very cheap to replace if lost, broken or should you require more pairs.

Active 3D TVs utilise slightly more complex technology with the specialised glasses doing a lot of the work. Active TV sets use LCD shutter glasses that are activated by a signal from the television. The shutters on the glasses open and close at the relevant times, allowing different images into each eye.

As the glasses themselves house a lot of the 3D technology they are more expensive to replace or purchase more, and one or two pairs of glasses are provided by LG, depending on the model of the 3D TV purchased.

LG is the only manufacturer to offer a choice of active or passive 3D TVs, allowing the consumer to make an informed choice based on their viewing preferences. They also offer compatible Blu-Ray players so that a wide range of movies can be enjoyed in 3D from home.

It is an exciting time for consumers and viewers looking to upgrade their television equipment. With Full LED televisions offering super sharp and crisp images, Plasma screens offering an enhanced movie watching experience, and a new wave of 3D televisions now on the market, there’s never been a better time to invest in new technology.

Selecting a TV that suits your individual viewing requirements means that you will be able to enjoy the films, movies, sports or games of your choice on the very best quality, clearest displays. Treat yourself and your family to a new television for 2011 and allow yourself to be engrossed and entertained like never before.
