Now entering it’s second year on the market the iPhone has now got some serious competition in the form of the number one selling mobile phones company in the world, Nokia. Nokia had previously previewed a touch screen phone that was a part of their music phone range but they had stressed that despite it having more impressive features than the iPhone that it was their entry level model of phones.

Little more than a few months later at their grandiose sounding “Nokia World” the Finnish mobiles giant revealed the Nokia N97, the next step in their flagship “n series” phones which have sold well amongst power users and business types for the past few years.

The phone has a large 3.5 in touchscreen with only one button on the face of it the phone slides out to reveal a full qwerty keyboard like the AT+T Tilt where the screen tilts to a 35 degree angle making the phone look more like a computer which Nokia feels that will help go along with their marketing of the N97 as a “mobile computer” rather than a simple phone.

The other interesting statistics are the storage inside of the phone being up to a massive 48GB of storage and a 5 Mega Pixel camera that rains on the iPhone’s parade with it’s non-upgradable 16GB and 2MP camera. The phone bears more than a passing likeness to the recent Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 which also has a hidden keyboard beneath it’s touch screen exterior.

The Symbian software the phone is based on has had it’s knocks over the past few years as being fairly unintuitive compared to the iPhone’s simplistic OSX based software but the new revision of the operating system has learnt from these mistakes and has many specific innovations like disabling the touchscreen when in a call by detecting when your face is close to the phone’s screen.

With the same size screen it is being compared to the Apple iPhone but is slightly thicker due to the qwerty keyboard being included, a growing market of mobile phones customers are looking for smaller phones but with the iPhone itself being fairly wide it is clear that true power house mobile phones like the N97 and the iPhone are moving towards larger screens for media use like watching movies or browsing the internet.

The N97 is expected to be released in selected markets around April 2009 in either White or traditional n series colour, Black at an estimated 500 euros.
