The word is out that LG are planning to launch at this years CES a smartphone that is powered by Intel, which would make it the first device to feature the world famous microchip manufacturers latest inception; the Medfield chipset. Intel have made no secret over the past couple of months of their intentions towards the smartphone market, and that they intend to grab a hefty slice of the pie that is currently monopolized by ARM.

The first step in this plan was in their formation of a unit totally dedicated to tackling the valuable mobile market, then along came details of the Medfield chipset and look at their test device. Intel are rightly proud of the Medfield, their latest power efficient, system on a chip that has been specifically designed to be used within tablets and smartphones.

The unbranded device which uses Android as its OS is available to manufacturers who can then adapt the design to suit their own use. The report in the Korea Times has suggested that LG have done this, and will be using CES2012 to showcase their effort. If this comes to fruition, the Korean manufacturer will have produced the first Intel powered smartphone in the world.

Although the newspapers sources seem confident enough, representatives of LG say differently, and that it is more likely that the company will be promoting the ‘reference design’ hardware with financial support from Intel. This has been a longstanding successful strategy from Intel, whose Intel Inside Program offsets the costs of advertising as long as the manufacturers use the Intel logo, and it could work as well for mobile as it does for PC’s.

A recent survey from Endsleigh Insurance has suggested that we currently value our gadgets over our lives, and that office workers are twice more likely to insure their gadgets that to take out a life insurance policy.

In this new poll, office workers were asked that if they had an extra £20 added to their salary, would be more likely to insure their mobile phones, their iPads or themselves. 28% said they would insure their phone or laptop, as opposed to only 17% who would invest in some life insurance.

When questioned further, respondents said that they couldn’t live without their smart phones and other gadgets such as iPads and laptops citing such reasons as:-

“I love my iPad, it’s the best thing ever…”

“My laptop holds all my personal information and photos, I’d be lost without it….”

“I couldn’t manage without my phone – I use it for everything, music, Facebook, and Twitter…..”

“If I ever forget to take my phone I feel lost without…..

The independent poll showed that the types of insurance that we were least likely to spend extra cash on were policies to cover jewellery (4%), travel (4%) and household appliances (5%). Interestingly people were twice as likely to take out insurance to cover the cost specifically for servicing their gas boiler, rather than cover the cost of repairing their fridge, freezer or cooker.

Will Brunwin, IFA Manager at Endsleigh, commented: “It’s worrying that many people are failing to see the importance of life insurance. It’s our responsibility to ensure that people understand that in the event of their death without this their dependents could be left with insufficient income to pay for not just phones, laptops and other gadgets, but significantly more important costs such as food, mortgage payments and utilities bills”

Recently, two phone to follow up the original Sensation have been launched, the Sensation XE, which has a more powerful processor and also the Sensation XL which has a larger screen and includes the Beats Audio program. Despite increased screen size the resolution on this new device is actually lower. The viewing angles remain excellent and the S-LCD means green is very bright and vibrant.

The question many consumers are asking themselves is where does the XL lie in this range of phones. The larger screen would suggest that it is a higher end product than the original sensation, but the lower resolution screen less powerful processor mean that many people are questioning whether this device is the premium one. The pricing of the device clearly suggests that it is a higher end product with a consumer having to spend £30 a month on a contract in order to get it free. The original sensation is available for free on a £20 a month contract.

The screen is the high point of the device and it comes to almost the edge of the device meaning that it is no larger than necessary. It is still a large phone but its design means that it feels good in the hand. The best thing about the screens of new mobile devices such as the iPhone 4 is that the screen seems as if it has been printed on the glass and this is something that this new Sensation is taking advantage of. Considering the size of the phone it is very light at only a touch over 160g.

There was so much disappointment with the lack of a iPhone 5 and the coming of the updated iPhone 4s, that many people just shot from the hip and labelled the device a failure. However, as the last month of iPhone 4S contract sales have shown, the phone is anything but.

As Mark Hirst, technology expert and Managing Director of UK comparison site Best mobile Contracts has said “The introduction of dual core processing and improved graphics helps Apple stay on top of its game. New developments such as iCloud, Siri and its new iOS 5 ensure that the iPhone 4S remains one of the leading handsets in the smartphone arena.”

However, why did we get an iPhone 4S and not an iPhone 5?

Well looking at the issues at hand, the sad departure of Steve Jobs from this world may be a reason. The lack of a leading light and the role of Tim Cook, which left other departments short would have left Apple in a tight place for man power and so there was a lack of time to create and iPhone 5. Apple needed to release something for Christmas and it had to be faultless and so an iPhone 4S was the best available option.

Apple is also having a number of problems with Samsung, who supplies the company with a wide array of its components. Apple and Samsung have been at legal loggerheads over patents recently and there are rumors that Samsung isn’t offering the American company the service it requires because of this. This may have limited components and also may be part of the issue that Apple is looking for a new partner to help with the big changes needed for its new iPhone 5. All of this may have prevented the production of the phone as planned.

Components may have also been in short supply because of the Tsunami in the east of Asia. This would have obviously slowed down the production of parts for the iPhone and pushed its creation back by a few months, such things may have affected the device.

Perhaps there was never meant to be an iPhone 5. We already had an updated iPhone 3GS before we had an iPhone 4, so why not an iPhone 4S before we get an iPhone 5? It makes complete sense when you think about it – so maybe the iPhone 5 was just a figment of our over expectant imaginations. It doesn’t matter too much as the new iPhone 4S does much of what we expected from the potential iPhone 5 anyway. It has the faster processor, improved interface and new features like iMessage and Siri. All that has not been present is a larger screen – and as many iPhone users will tell you, a larger screen is not really wanted.

The mobile phone producers Nokia have been struggling in recent years the company hopes that its new range of Windows smartphones will do the job of reviving the company. Despite the company’s recent struggles it is still the largest phone manufacturer in the world, and it has recently announced that it will be abandoning its current operating systems in favour of the new system offered by Windows, Windows Phone 7.

The move was announced eight months ago and since then the market share of Nokia has dropped significantly, the company is also stopped making a profit. The company now hope that the release of the first phone based on the Windows system will mark a turnaround for the company.

The first two phones will be launched in Europe and Asia this year and it is expected that the devices will come to the United States at some point next year. Some technology reviewers have already had access to the phones and the reception to them has been generally neutral. The consensus is that they are good but that no one which trade in an iPhone for one.

The new device also only has a single core processor, while many new phones are offering dual cores. That said, the device still performs quickly and it doesn’t seem to have any lack. The screen on the higher end device is bright and clear, but the lower end model has a screen that appears rather dull, it is also significantly less attractive. The lower end device has the same processor so it is fast but the camera is of a much lower resolution, the high-end device has an impressive eight megapixel camera included.

Nokia has recently developed a great many new devices and the Nokia Kinetic is a new phone model being shown by the company that can be twisted and bent. The model has made its debut at the Nokia technology show which was held in October this year. The device features a flexible screen that is 5 inches and it currently has two main applications: a music player and a photo viewer.

Twisting the screen of the device means that various functions are performed. You can move the screen to select the different icons available and you can also use it to zoom in and out on photos stored on the device. Twisting the device can also be used to start the music application and can be used to navigate a users pictures on the device. This phone has been designed with the latest operating systems in mind and should be compatible with them.

This is a relatively new device that is still in development and there are several concerns that people have raised about how it will work. One problem is that the device cannot be operated with one hand and some have wondered how unintentional operations will be avoided when the phone is in the pocket. Nokia said that the phone would be particularly good for gaming given the way that people will be able to interact with the device.

Nokia is not the first company to develop a flexible device. In the past Kyocera and Synaptics have both tried to design players with flexible screens, however these companies failed in their efforts. Many people are curious as to whether Nokia will be more successful.

The new Meizu MX is the successor of the M9, the iPhone imitation that they camped out in China for, and certainly won’t come cheap.

So can a cline of the iPhone that is powered by Android really beat the original? If you look at it spec for spec, the MX is actually capable of beating the pants off the new iPhone 5. To start with, the screen on the MX will be a 4.3 inch qHD, as opposed to the rumoured 3.7-4 inch retina display the iPhone 5 will have, and both devices with have the same resolution of 960X640.

While the MX is proudly boasting its quad core processor, the iPhone is expected to have the same A5 dual core processor as the iPad 2. The two devices can’t be split as far as the cameras and storage are concerned. The iPhone 5 is expected to have the same 8 megapixel flash camera as the MX, and also come with the same 16/32GB configs, as this is what the iPhone 4 had.

The one sticking point is that the MX had never before left China, and while it is expected to be cheaper than the iPhone, we have no idea as yet how all that power will affect the battery life. The best comparison is the PS Vita, this quad core powered device only has a battery life of 3-5 hours thanks to everything that’s going on under the hood, and there isn’t even a phone in the Vita.

Whichever way you look at it, if you import a Meizu MX you can rest assured that you own the world’s most powerful smartphone on the planet, but not necessarily the best optimized or the fastest. How long before the rest of the smartphones catch up is anyone’s guess, but if you aren’t prepared to wait the MX launches this month

There doesn’t seem to be a week goes by without the launch of a new smartphone that promises to be better than all the rest. In this fiercely competitive market, there are more that sink without a trace than make it to the upper echelons of the smartphone kingdom. There are some new arrivals however, that simply due to their name, grab your attention and make you sit up and take notice, and one of these is the Windows Phone.

Windows is a name synonymous with today’s technology, and the backing of the mighty Microsoft Corporation promises great things. As we have all learnt in the past however, a name doesn’t always deliver what it promises, but the Windows Phone seems to do what it say on the tin, and much more besides.

What you get with a Windows Phone UK is essentially the Windows technology built into HTC handsets, one of the top names for both performance and reliability. The current models that are being marketed under the Windows Phone banner are; the HTC 7 Mozart, the HTC HD7, both on 02, the HTC Mozart on Orange, and the HTC Radar and Titan on Phones4U. The combination of these handsets and the Windows technology make for very impressive smartphones.

There is an awful lot of technology packed into these phones, but the performance certainly doesn’t suffer for it. It has the full Office suite so you have access to all your emails and files instantly, as well as creating new documents on mobile Word or creating presentations with the powerpoint facility. This is an obvious boon to those who use their smartphones in a professional way with Office being the biggest of its kind across the globe.

One click brings up the Bing Search Engine, and finding what you are looking for on your handset has never been easier. If you are looking for the times of a film for example, as well as giving you all the info you need, it will also bring up the apps that allow you to buy the tickets there and then and give you the option to download them if you haven’t already got them.

These are the only phones that have the innovative people hub, allowing a one touch connection to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, ensuring that you are always kept in the loop. The excellent camera enables you to take pictures even if your phone is locked, so no more missed photo opportunities.

There are many more great features to these phones that you can check out on the website, but suffice to say, this is one smartphone that is going to be huge.

NFC, which stands for near field communication, is a technology that preceded Bluetooth but is now finding itself being incorporated into new mobile phones. The technology enables phones to swap photos, add new features such as games, or pay for goods.

Bluetooth is a faster technology, but NFC uses less energy and does not require two devices to be paired together. An example of the new use of this technology is with the popular application Angry Birds. New levels can be unlocked with this game simply by touching to mobile phones together.

The device can be used for simple transactions, such as purchasing tickets for travel or events. Coupons can also be used with the device. The technology first came about in the 1980s but has only come into popular use over the last five years.

The first NFC phone was released by the Nokia Corporation in 2005, but the company has said all of its Symbian mobile phones will support the technology. Consumers are anticipating the launch of the Nokia phones running the Windows operating system and it is expected that these will also have NFC functionality.

Nokia is also working in China to promote NFC technology. The country has over 200 million people with mobile phones. It was in 2007 in Guangzhou, Xiamen and Beijing that Nokia first started conducting trials of the technology in China.

Wang Ying is an analyst based at an Analysis International, and he commented, “We once saw Nokia as old mobile phone maker who was reluctant to accept changes in the market. This attitude seems to have changed as Nokia is now more embracing of changes and new technologies. We are now seeing Nokia reach of partners in the industry to cooperate with the launch of NFC services in China.”
