Lucas Ordonez 2010 with Nissan 370Z GT4

A collaboration between Sony Computer Entertainment UK (SCE UK)  and Nissan is offering     the exclusive, and additional, opportunity to join other online gamers at the GT Academy for the 2011 national finals. This is a contest for users of the Playstation 3 who battle against each other online in a time trial to try and win the ultimate prize in gaming. That prize being a seat in the Nissan 370Z for the famous 24 hour race in Dubai.

Anyone who plays online through a PS3 and owns a copy of Gran Turismo 5 can enter the GT Academy. This wild card slot, however, gives gamers an additional chance of making it through to the national finals, which are being held in May.

Competitors are invited to enter the ‘Wild Card’ contest, hosted at the Nissan Innovation Station at The O2, by registering at www.nissangtawildcard.co.uk for an entry slot between 10am and 8pm on either 1^st, 2^nd, or 3^rd April, when they will complete a time trial using PS3 race pods.

Each entrant’s quickest lap of three will be recorded, with the best drivers from each of the three days winning a Logitech Driving Force GT™ steering wheel, the official wheel of Gran Turismo, which features force feedback and 900-degree wheel rotation. The best time overall across the three days will win the extra place at the National Finals.

The inaugural GT Academy, in 2008, was won by Spanish student Lucas Ordoñez, who was recently named as a member of Nissan’s Le Mans 24 Hours prototype sports car programme.

At the National Finals, participants will take part in a series of Gran Turismo 5 gaming heats. Additional non-gaming challenges that the National Finalists face will be unveiled in due course.

Two UK National Final victors will advance to the International Finals, to be held at Silverstone in June, when competitors will take to the track in Nissan’s 3.7-litre, 323bhp 370Z models.

Paul Willcox, Nissan Motor GB’s Managing Director, said: “Lucas, our 2008 GTA winner, is living proof that virtual driving skills can be transferred to real-world racing. This year, we are adding this special opportunity for one talented gamer to join the UK’s best in the National race to turn the dream of a motor sport career into reality.”

David Wilson, Head of PR for Sony Computer Entertainment UK, said: “The ambition of Sony Computer Entertainment was to make a game that gives players the ultimate driving simulation experience. The GT Academy partnership with Nissan is the realisation of this ambition, setting Gran Turismo 5 gamers the ultimate challenge on PlayStation 3. The success of previous winners Lucas Ordoñez and Jordan Tresson demonstrates that GT Academy has grown into a credible route into motor sport.”

The Nissan Innovation Station at The O2 is a free exhibition which features driving simulators, a virtual car design programme and interactive games that show visitors of all ages how electric vehicles can change the way people will drive and live in the future.

After 16 years and a swarm of installments later, one is bound to think that the Mortal Kombat franchise has lost its zing. The game has seen a massive evolution from, humble looking 256 color graphics, to the slick 3D models in the latest offering, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The franchise has managed to keep up with changing times and also keep their fan which is no easy feat. The downside to the longevity is that it gets tougher to come out with something new and surprise the fans every time. Well, Ed Boon, the creator of the series has managed to do just that, by announcing the eighth entry of the series, Mortal Kombat vs DC universe. The game can be safely called as the most ambitious project since Deadly Alliance. The storyline for the game is still under wraps, however leaks suggests that a cataclysmic event leads to the merging of the DC and the MK world. This sets the tone for a perfect story mode which will be offering two perspectives of the situation. This means you can play the game in two different story modes which is going to be a massive boost to the replay ability.

The cataclysmic in the story is supposedly driven by magic, which is basically a handy element which is tapped for gameplay.The mystic entity that runs through the story actually helps to keep the fight balanced. For instance battles between Superman whose only vulnerability is magic and Sub-Zero actually make sense. Ed Boon has stressed that maintaining the balance of the game will be the key factor, this time it will have to be on several levels. Midway has to put up with double the expectations, trying to balance a passionate set of Mortal Kombat fans and on the other hand DC fans who are equally passionate but sadly never had the chance to see their heroes featured in a really good game. Ed and his team has revamped the whole fighting system for this one, they also did away with the multiple fighting systems and weapons. In place is a more visceral and out right brutal fighting technique. The team has introduced several new techniques in an effort to make the fights more dynamic. The three most prominent ones are Klose Kombat, Stage Interaction and Freefall Kombat. Klose Kombat allows you to pull in the camera close and allow you to be more aggressive. You will be able to direct blows at your foe’s upper body for a specific period of time. To balance it out, your opponent will be able to defend himself with a set of moves, provided he/she is fast enough. Freefall Kombat is another mode which alters the combat pace, the mode kicks off when you throw you opponent off the stage. The camera will move in and you will be able to fight much like Klose Kombat but outside the stage. There are also talks of revising the game’s fatalities as you really can’t expect Batman or Superman to rip out spines and hearts.

The communicator comes with a black plastic body, grill, an antenna, two knobs, indicator lights, and looks like a mini walkie-talkie radio. This communicator looks something out of the future with its twirling moiré running in a few close-ups. The working of moiré is run by a stopwatch. The pop makers removed the lens and mounted an old analog piece at the bottom of the disk to the second hand of the stopwatch. When it is started, the moiré would spin round and round, just a touch due to the machined movement of the stopwatch as it would be ticked off each tenth of a single second.

You can play all the sayings from the Scotty, Spock, and Uhura by simply pressing the button. Hold the button for about five seconds and quickly close down the communicator. After a few seconds the communicator would start to beep and you would require opening it again. The Spock would ask if he could beam down a landing party. The Star trek classic communicator makes an excellent toy.
