Monday saw an announcement from Lenovo that they have a touchscreen ultrabook that by simply flipping the display can be turned into a tablet. The IdeaPad Yoga has a 13.3in screen and the ultrabook was demonstrated during a Lenovo press conference at the CES in Las Vegas running on the upcoming Windows 8 OS from Microsoft.

Yang Yuanqing, the CEO and chairman of Lenovo, said during the press conference that you can simply fold it from a PC into a tablet, or from a tablet into a PC. The ultrabook is very slim, making it easy and comfortable to hold when in tablet mode. The unit is 1.6cm thick and weighs 1.4kg, and, according to Lenovo, provides 8 hours of battery life from a single charge.

Yuanqing also said t hat the IdeaPad Yoga will be on general sale once Windows 8 has been released, and whilst the date has been pencilled in for later in 2012, no official release date as been announced as yet.

Ultrabooks are the latest category of slim, lightweight laptops and are backed heavily by Intel, who are trying to revive the flagging PC market by injecting it with new designs in laptops. Earlier on Monday, Intel had said that any future ultrabooks would implement the features you see on tablets, and have longer battery life, voice recognition and touch screens.

Lenovo didn’t share any more details about the IdeaPad Yoga, but Yuanqing warned that the PC market wasn’t going anywhere soon, and that innovation would continue in PC just as it was doing in tablets and smartphones. He said that many people believed that the traditional PC was coming to the end of its life, but his company believed the opposite.

It is expected that the IdeaPad Yoga will come with the new and upcoming Intel Core processors, code namedIvyBridge, and will provide both a faster application and better graphics performance. The ultrabook was only one of the many devices which :Lenovo intends to introduce at CES, these include voice controlled 3D smart televisions complete with Android 4.0, smartphones and tablets, one of which has a quad core processor.

The new piece of software is called TaskMaster Companion, and it is going to work on a variety of mobile devices including tablets and smart phones.

The managing director of the company is Steve Reynolds and he has said, “We’ve been working on a cross-platform program for a long time and we have devised something that is going to work well with evolving mobile technologies.

User experience is something we’re having a key focus on and this has resulted in us redesigning several components and the software so it works well with the operating systems of all current tablets and smartphone devices.”

TaskMaster Companion will help companies reduce hardware and infrastructure costs as employees will be able to use advanced tools in the field. The new device allows businesses to use new forms of technology to allow people to work in the field and utilises the fact that many people carry smart phones and tablets around with them everywhere.

Many people have been critical of it however, meaning it hasn’t been as successful as expected.

Microsoft are expected to launch Windows 8 onto the tablet market later this year but many people are unsure of the effect this is going to have on the market. The best efforts of leading competitors such as HTC, Samsung and Motorola have been unable to have a significant effect on Apple’s market dominance and many people are thinking that the Windows device is going to have a hard job breaking into the market.

It is also expected that tablet devices running Windows 8 are going to be very expensive, with pricetags expected to be around £600. Many people are expecting that this high price will mean that people see it as simply too expensive and will go for alternative devices.

Analysts are predicting that Microsoft and Intel are going to become quite aware that this price is too high, much like those producing Android systems did around a year ago. This is an indication of just how far Microsoft is behind in the game.

Generally, all in one computers are not seen as a way to replace the desktop but are more used as an entertainment machines. However the Dell Inspiron One is a machine that packs the punch of the desktop but comes in a much smaller case. It is retailing at £799 which is much less than an equivalent machine available from Apple.

A relatively new feature of all in one PCs is the addition of a touch screen and this is something that is being heavily marketed by the company. The touch screen does not lack any of the resolution that you might expect of a high-end desktop and there is a high-definition screen capable of 1080p resolution and is 23 inches big. This size means that many people will be happy to watch films on it and it is even capable of being mounted on a wall.

Touch is not the only way to interface with the device and there is also a keyboard and mouse provided with it. The computer comes with an i5 processor which is perfect for is capabilities, and provides quad core computing at 2.5 GHz and is capable of up to 3.3 GHz when run on a single thread.

If you are looking to buy a cheaper model of this computer then there is one available, it is not running an i5 processor however, but a Pentium G6 20, which is essentially the same as an i3 without the hyper threading and it is slightly slower.

Despite this it is still capable of integrating with high-definition graphics from Intel. The higher priced machine might well be worth it as the amount of RAM you get is significantly more at 6GB. There is also plenty of storage available on the devices as there is a 1TB hard disk included which is becoming more and more common in mid-range devices.

Paris played host last moth to the Cartes and Identification conference, the annual event that showcases global players in the digital payment and security sector. The event lasted for three days and it attracted over 20,000 visitors who saw what 450 companies from 150 countries had to offer.

One of those exhibiting their wares were the app developers eMerit Solutions from Manchester, who are headed by Tim Corke, the CEO, Simon Boyd, the former commercial director of Data Select and Keith Curran, the founder of Yes Telecom.

eMerit were at the event as the guests of payment giant Visa, and were there to unveil what they have claimed to be the the first real UK payment solution that combines mobile technology with the familiarity and security of chip and PIN.

The product is being sold through eMerits two distribution partners; Data Select and Micro-P, and last week the company confirmed that it was in the final stages of securing a major deal with HSC. This service has already been showcased at the last 3 Data Select platinum club dealer events and the company has claimed that the feedback it received from these events was very positive.

EMerit have already partnered the HSBC bank for merchant services and had claimed that there are over 800,000 UK small businesses t hat would benefit from being able to accept payments wirelessly using either Wi-Fi or mobile date, and they highlighted gardeners and construction workers as potential target markets.

Corke, who joined eMerit 18 months ago, has said that the company had worked hard to find a solution that customers would find to be both trustworthy and familiar and that would also sit within the current UK banking infrastructure. He also said that there was a massive segment of the population who only us their cards to make payments, and as banks have invested heavily in chip and PIN they couldn’t ignore this.

Corke added that the world was changing and the key to these changes was mobility. The company has looked at ways in which people could use their smartphone as an accepted device which the banks would support and they have now achieved this, something that nobody else is doing at present and they are very proud of this fact.

Corke happily to explained more about it. He said that is looks really simple to the customer, and is immediately familiar. He also said that small businesses were their main targets, as well as micro merchants such as builders, electricians and plumbers, but it was available to everyone and anyone can implement it.

The news broke with an announcement by head of Nokia France Paul Amsellem in a French newspaper with a comment that the company soon plans to add the new OS to its upcoming line of tablets. Of course, Nokia’s PR group states that this is not official, but it is still very likely to be true.

It is not all that suprising that Nokia would pick up Windows 8 for their new tablet given the fact that earlier in the year Stephen Elop, the Nokia CEO, told Bloomberg that Windows 8 will soon seriously impact the tablet market and that the upgraded OS would create a great deal of opportunities. At the time he did not directly say that the company would be using it on their tablets, but one can infer that since he felt the need to mention it there were plans in the works further cemented by the new comment by Amsellem.

Although not a popular choice, Nokia has been a part of the tablet market for quite some time with attempts at eating into the market seen as early as the N810, N800, and 770 tablets all of which were run with Linux-on-ARM. As they have now proven that they can endure in the tablet market and their already close partnership with Windows OS on their smartphones now would seem like the time to try to take a larger cut of the market by being the first device to fully utilize the yet unreleased Windows 8.

He’s made the device in collaboration with Hughes Electrical group and the new tablet device will be available across the UK. The devices are running the Android operating system and have a 7 inch screen. Several applications come pre-installed on the device including several 3-D games.

The device has a high-definition screen, expandable memory, and with an HDMI cable it is capable of playing HD videos. Mr Kerry said that his inspiration for the device was when he wanted to buy a tablet for its children but they were simply too expensive. He had inspiration for his device when he saw several tablet devices made by Chinese manufacturers at a trade show in Hong Kong.

The device is available in several stores but is primarily available on the company’s website. The device is capable of storing several types of media including, film, music, books and photos. Mr Kerry has commented, “I fully expect this to be a big hit with gadget lovers, sales so far have been strong and with our strong reputation and excellent customer service we expect a good relationship to develop with our customers.”

The company have said they’ve teamed up with Hughes Electrical group because they have an excellent reputation and share values with Mr Kerry’s company. It is expected that most of the sales of the device will be to parents who are looking to buy a more affordable tablet for their children.

A new chip has been designed to work with cloud servers and it has come from MD. The chip is an Opteron chip with 16 cores which is more than any other chip on the market. The company are hoping that the additional cores will mean the manufacturers with a focus on outdoing the competition will quickly decide to use the new.

In a comment from the company they said, “for those who are working in a heavily threaded environment it is a natural choice, especially for those utilising cloud computing.” It has been designed on the new bulldozer architecture from AMD and it has been announced that within the coming weeks the chip will start appearing in IBM, HP, Cray, and Dell servers.

There are a great variety of different models in the range with the smallest having four cores and the largest having 16. The maximum clock speed is 3.3 GHz but a power boost of 500 MHz is possible. Marketing from AMD has claimed that the chips are capable of outperforming same priced competitors by nearly 90%.

A representative from AMD has commented, “Businesses are looking ever more to the cloud for increased efficiencies and agility in their competing.Virtualisation has made this possible and it has placed the industry at a juncture. This new chip is the way forward for processing and is one of the most anticipated releases in the server market for some time; it should help businesses offer a full range of services and solutions.”

A product marketing analyst for AMD has said, “Not only are these chips powerful but they also use little power. Active idle power in servers is expected to be able to be reduced by up to 20% and this can be a significant cost saving to businesses who are choosing to implement servers using the chip.” AMD also announced the release of the Opteron 4200 chip which offers the most processing power for the least amount of electrical power.

Fujitsu recently released their first Xeon E3 tower and inside its large chassis are plenty of powerful features. This is its latest entry-level server and it is expected to offer strong competition to rivals HP and Dell.

The server is designed to offer small and medium-sized businesses a system with a lot of potential for expansion as well is a good base for meeting their server needs. Typically it is expected that the workload of this server will include databasing, mailing, and the storage and management of files. It is a relatively low-cost system and could also be a good option as a branch server for larger companies.

The offering from HP is the ProLiant ML110G7 and from Dell there is the PowerEdge T110 II and both of these servers are quite a bit smaller than the offering from Fujitsu. The extra spaces are not just for show and there is plenty of room for expansion and inside there is space for hot swap discs and eight 2.5 inch disks. At the front there is room for several 5.25 inch disks.

The system has roughly the equivalent amount of data storage to the HP and has quite a bit more than the Dell as this can only accommodate six drives. The motherboard is an Intel C202 chipset with a four port interface and this can connect to the drive cage with one cable. Stripes and mirrors are both supported but the addition of a PCI card can easily add RAID support. It has half a gigabyte of cache memory and there is the opportunity to add a backup battery.

The design of the chassis is neat so that the small motherboard inside the server does look a bit strange in its surroundings. The reason for its small size is because Fujitsu have saved costs in this area development and thus passed them onto customers.
