Tailored for television use, the BBC will launch a newly redesigned iPlayer service. Initially the service was available via Sony PlayStation 3 but now the updated version will be available across internet capable TVs and set-top boxes. The television version is simplified and can be accessed via a TV remote and personalised for playback and favourites.
BBC general manager of programmes Daniel Danker says the iPlayer is being transformed in its home, on top of everyone’s TV in their living room. Because the product has been simplified and is now as intuitive as surfing TV channels on demand, this way of watching TV is going mainstream thanks to the BBC across all of the UK. The probability of a high take up is palpable, since over 10% of TVs that are currently sold across the UK are internet ready.
The new version follows a new iPlayer global iPad app that was launched just over two weeks as a “new global concept and brand”, says BBC’s head of design for global iPlayer and bbc.com Duncan Swain. Pinch Zoom was appointed in October 2010 to aid BBC Worldwide in the design of the global pilot programme for the iPlayer.
