It has been declared in Wilmington by the General Motors that they will launch the all electric volt in the year 2010. This announcement is after the company’s board approval of the funding for the high profile plug-in vehicle production. It has been said by the General Motors chief executive, Rick Wagoner that the Chevy Volt is a go. He said this way ahead of the company’s annual meeting along with the shareholders in Delaware.

Actual facts of the launching

The chief executive said that through the approval the management and the board believe in the Volt technical goals. And this is not only achievable but it can be achieved within the time frame that they had outlined before. This announcement symbolizes the detailed road map to the upliftment of high anticipated car to the market in 2010. This is a grand timetable which is challenged by some of the competitors of General Motors.

Such successful launch of the all electric volt is quite critical to the GM as they are the topmost US automakers and are struggling with the heavy line up of trucks and claims to edge in the fuel saving technology. This is against the Toyota Motor Corporation and the market leading Prius hybrid. Further, Mr. Wagoner also specified their plan to manufacture the volt in its own Michigan plant in Hamtramck. The whole process totally depends on the negotiations with the state and local governments for the tax incentives. Also, the GM is committed to the target of getting the car to the showrooms by 2010.

Other details

Apart from this, the gas electric hybrids like the Prius runs on a system like the twin’s battery power and also combustion engine. The colt can be powered totally by an electric motor and has a battery which can be charged through an ordinary power socket. There is also an on-board engine which can be used only to power the long trips battery usage.

Before the event, it has been decided by the executives that the 2010 timeline can be a stretch to meet as the GM was rushing to do basic battery development work. This was during the time when it engineered a new vehicle from ground up. GM, at present is focusing on design of the volt to run for forty miles, which will be powered by a 400 pound lithium-ion battery pack. This can be recharged at a standard electric outlet when the vehicle is parked. The volt marks its first and foremost attempt to adapt to the lithium-ion battery which can be used widely in the consumer electronics in order to power the car.

Toyota is also planning to race to the market with its own plug-in hybrid by 2010 by using the same technology. It has also become urgent for GM to get the pioneering plug in hybrid in to the market at first. This is because, GM copes with high gasoline prices and the automaker sees it as a permanent threat for its business.
