Indian Jones’s next big screen adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is set to be released in a matter of weeks. LucasArts will follow suit with the game version on pretty much every available game platform. For the unfamiliar, Lego Indiana Jones has broken down the content in the first three films into an action packed six episodes, much the same way as they did with the Lego Star Wars games. The previewed level was from the second film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The scene is set in a Shanghai nightclub where Indy is poisoned by a group of gangsters. A mad scramble ensues with Indy frantically trying to reach the antidote. As with the previous games, the game lets you switch characters at will, another player can join in at any time.
Cooperation between the characters is a major part of the game as with the previous Lego Games. You’ll have to exploit the strengths of the various characters in order to solve puzzles and to vanquish enemies. The concept is particularly important in the preview level as Indy is handicapped by the poison and cannot jump or use his normal attacks. Indy is surrounded by the Gangsters and you need to throw fake antidote bottles at them till they drop the real thing. Willie has to take most of the burden here, though she is not as powerful as Indy she can jump greater distance and also has a piercing scream which can shatter glass.
Once Indie and Willie escape into the streets, they are joined by Short Round. This guy can crawl into confined spaces, and needs to use his ability to steal some car parts to make their getaway. There is a bit of fun vehicular action here, Indy needs to slam the car into his enemies and kill them all. The trio finally arrives at the airport where after a bit of puzzle solving they make their getaway.
The next level was from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movie and involved the same cooperative action sequence showcased in Shanghai section. This sequence takes place in Venice where Indy is joined by Elsa and Marcus Brody. Both of them share the same special ability of decoding special tablets in order to unlock special doors. This is a bit of Simon Says minigames wherein you are required to repeat a specific pattern which appears on the tablets. The level starts off on the streets of Venice before moving into a mammoth library and finally heads underground. The grand finale takes place in the canal with Indy chasing the baddies on a speedboat.
If you liked the Star Wars Lego series then Lego Indiana Jones is a must buy, apart from a few gameplay additions the game has the feel. With more than 60 playable characters the replayability factor has received a massive boost. The game will be released in early June on the PSP, DS, Xbox 260, PS2, Wii, PC and PS3
