Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is a turn based tactic video game for the Nintendo DS. It is Intelligent System’s massively popular turn-based strategy series returns with Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The game can be safely described to be utterly divergent to its predecessors. The game tend to shy away from the ridiculously happy-go-lucky attitude towards conflict, in favor of a more darker and ponderous undertone. It’s as if the series is going through its teenage years. The gameplay will feel familiar to veteran players, however the increased difficult makes it a slightly less accessible experience. Even then, Days of Ruin still remains an awesome game, offering tons of content. The game is set in a bleak tone featuring a world that has been left in shambles at the end of the world. The Earth is stuck by meteors, and is portrayed as post apocalyptic. The survivors scour the planet looking for food and supplies all the while evading the bandit groups that have started popping up in large numbers. The story deals with the life of a young boy called Will, who is rescued by a small group of surviving soldiers from the Rubinelle army. The band roams around the desolate landscape, occasionally encountering bandits, deceitful politicians and soldiers who are hell-bent on maintaining their pre-apolocalytpic grudges. The story is no doubt a dramatic shift in tone from the precious games which were fascinating for their breezy tone. The game sheds its brighter primary hues for more sober earthy tones. The game also features redrawn graphics, which are more intricate and animated that the previous titles. The music is a bit on the aggressive side, however after listening to the same same old rock opera for dozens of missions, you will find it aggressively irritating.

The changes are largely cosmetic; underneath the entire pretense is still the unrelenting action that has made the franchise arguably the most enjoyable one on any system. Veteran Advance Wars fans will notice that quite a bit of balancing into the game. A few units have been taken off, while some new have been introduced including an antitank unit, the flare unit and the war tank. There are also new obstacles to evade in the battle field, like the wild energy field emitted by the meteors. The commanding Officer’s powers have been retooled, and though the CO you choose to play will have an impact on the battle, it is now less significant. The individual units in the game can now gain rank through combat. Even with these pretty significant changes the game manages to stay true to the original pace and feel of the series. The single player campaign features 26 missions of varying length, as well as numerous training missions which are often more challenging than the, main missions. Even of the stiff difficulty factor and the clumsy “serious” tone of the game doesn’t do anything to make it the most interesting game out there, its still a very likeable and entertaining online action game fro Nintendo DS.
